I am thinking of ultimately retiring to Northern Cyprus and my Mother who is 94 has asked to come on a perminant basis rather than just for an extended holiday.

Has any one any idea of the difficulties that might be expected bearing in mind her age and the possibility that she may shortly need specialist help. Are any of the services that we enjoy in this country available alhough I appreciate that they will have to be paid for.

Any observations and comments would be appreciated.

Hi David,I wish you all the best if you decide to come here to live.I have lived here for 5 years and I love it. I'm sure you will too.Regarding your mum,you will have to take into consideration that there is no NHS and as a foreigner you have to pay for all medical services. The public hospitals are cheaper than private In the public hospital the staff do expect(as in a lot of countries)the family to care for the patients hygiene, feeding etc,You may also have to buy medications from outside the hospital(they give you a script and you take it to a pharmacy)There are some agencies here that have staff(nurses, carers, home help type people)Again you will have to pay for their services. Some TC's that I know have a live in helper from Turkey and she isn't paid very much but gets her board and lodging free. Most of the TCs look after their elderly relatives at home in this way or with a relative designated to do the caring.

There was a nurse agency here some tim e ago but it closed down and may have been due to RED tape, who knows. I am an R.G.N. and would be willing to help you when the times arrives. There are other nurses here too and maybe in time another nurses agency will be formed. There is an ad running in Cyprus today for nurse agency but have no idea of the costs/charges.
