A couple of months ago (after a Medieval Cyprus Fellowship lecture on Medieval Girne and its hidden Lusignan/Venetian remains) I promised several people to organise a walk in Girne/Kyrenia. It's cool enough now, so let's do it.

If you are interested mail me what you prefer: Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday morning (from around 10 o'clock) and how many people.

Mail to: mcf.trnc@gmail.com

P.S. The number of participants is limited - first come...

Would love to but pins not up to it. I'm sure you'd make it very interesting and informative.

OK, Bill. If Girne still stands..., which you don't know with the current Mayor, who built biking paths that end in the middle of nowhere, planted 1200 palm trees (1199 now dead), built fountains in roundabouts (had no water last year for three months) etc. Wouldn't be surprised if Girne Castle became Girne Casino. You're on the list, Bill...

We would definitely be interested for Spring/Autumn next year.

RE msg 6, ROBnJO: (...) We wouldn't have to wear clogs would we? (...)

=> What a silly question! The walk is for "Dutch(wo)men only" (*) who, as all British know, eat tulips from Amsterdam all day long and wear clogs "made in Taiwan".

(*) Didn't I mention that in my first post?

As an afterthought, why not suggest a small donation per person for a suitable charity?

How refreshing it is that every once in a while we see posts on here that actually contribute to the knowledge of the place some now call home and an individual sharing their experiences for free.

I hope the tour goes well for those that can make it.

Well done Dutch.

RE msg 10, Bill: (...) Hans, by the way will you be providing lunch? (...)

=> I just finished the "free of any charge program", Bill, and I'm pleased to present it here for your consideration: Kyrenia: 10 am: arrival of the participants by taxi (free pick-up at their homes). 10.15-10.30 (or shorter on request): a very fast run through the old harbour and walled Kyrenia to see the bl**dy old stones there (who cares?). 10.30: Free Sunday Lunch in the Dome Hotel (with Karaoke, Elvis Presley and a raffle with great prizes!). 14.00: taxi's ready to take the exhausted participants home. From 6 pm: I'll be ready at my computer to accept complaints via email and apologise. What do you think, Bill?

Han. I'm not sure about a very fast run through the old harbour and walled Kyrenia to see the bl**dy old stones there. I'm OK with the rest though. Perhaps Rob will treat us to lunch?

Bill, since my poor Dutch sense of humour doesn't match the world famous British humour, in fact is far inferior: msg 11 is utter rubbish and I can't take any responsibility for any disappointment during the Karaoke. Thank you.

First group is "fully booked" now. You'll be informed (around the week end) about details of the walk by email.

Oh blow - I am too late for the first walk.

So, Hans, if you get any who drop out because they don't like the idea of the proposed Itinerary(!) I would love to be a substitute for a walk around Girne (when my foot is better), for free - no donations to charity, but I would buy you a cup of coffee by way of 'thanks'.

Why no donation to charity. I don't like blackmail!

So, are you taking names for a second walk. My foot might be better by then and I can run and not limp and learn things about Girne I have not so far known. And I have some friends who would be interested too.

And thanks, Hans, for keeping your word and for offering something for nothing. Just like the good old days of caring communities. And just as well no clogs. The only pair I had was when I was 10 and I have outgrown them, and in any case they are all sawdust now!

Names for another group (or two if there are enough interested people) are taken - but only via email: mail to: mcf.trnc@gmail.com . Don't forget to mention for how many people you make a reservation!

From another thread, by MartinM: (...) PS Whatever happened to the guide tour?. I e-mailed you with my preferred day but have not had a response yet. (...)

=> Thursday and today I was very busy with a route map for the "Route of the Fifth Great Pegasos Car Treasure Hunt - In aid of Lefkosha Haemodialysis Unit and other good causes - Sunday, April 11 - 2010". So I planned to wait till the week end when all interested people would have emailed me - I figured - and then form groups. I didn't reply to emails yet. I hope you understand that.
