| We went to the olive factory at Karaoglanoglu today to press our olives. This was our second year of picking, and we filled two black dustbins full from our trees, in all about 65KG. I decided to arrive at about 7.30 as its always busy and not a comfortable place to stay for many hours as its hot and very noisy. You also beat the horrendous traffic if you go early. I was back within a couple of hours so didn’t have to wait long. The cost was 50TL , and the yield was 1 litre of oil from every 4.5kg of olives. This equates to costings of about 2TL per litre. I will leave my oil in a cool place for a few months to settle out. It looks much like green engine oil at present but tastes great! Last year I used coffee filter papers to finish the process, but hope to find a better method this time round. For those of you who haven’t yet tried picking your olives, it is hard work, but great fun, and does have the benefits of burning off those calories! |

| Leave it in a cool and dark place. No need to filter it at all by the way, just leave it to settle - I guess you brought it all back in one large container? - then put it into bottles when you want to use it. Don't take it all out at once and bottle it because it is better off sitting on its own and slowly clearing. 2TL a litre is a good price when this year the prediction is that it will cost 35TL a litre once it gets into the shops! Well done! |
