Been here 5 years and could count on ONE hand how many letters have got through and then only Official letters as they know no money is in them.

In more than 5 years one postcard to us went missing, but it was sent from France to TRNC. Not one problem with mail from Holland.

We also have a PO box in Girne, in 2 yrs can count on one hand how much post we have had, never get birthday cards etc (all addressed correctly with Mersin 10) but yes, like many others always get the TAX letters.

There was an article on the front page of LAST Saturday's Cyprus Today about the problem........

No real solution offered though, from what I could see. And it only referred to mail from the U.K., not from anywhere else in the world.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones then........I have a post box in Karaoglanoglu. In 4 yrs I've lost one parcel and 2 cards.

Everything else comes through without a hitch.......from all over the world.

We have had lots go astray, birthday, anniversary cards, present from Germany, thank you cards. All that seems to get through is "official mail". Even some stuff in brown evelopes fail to turn up.. it is really frustrating at times.

No problems with outgoing mail, but in 26 years, incoming mail almost non existant. Local mail, tax demands etc. arrive no problem.

Im waiting for a bumper birthday and christmas when all the missing cards and presents eventually turn up. Not just from UK also Canada and Austrilia. Only thing I have received in 5 years was a packet of walkers crisps a customer sent to me. The were dust. the thought was there xx

You make me laugh Liz! I also received a packet of Walker's shortbread from my sister-in-law in Australia, a couple of years back! Powder like yours! I made an apple 'crumble' topping with them!

Brother is law sent a parcel for our kids... with playing cards, book, necklace and a scarf. The parcel had been opened and the cards and book stolen. Even though all the items were written on the customs declaration!

Unfortunately theft is endemic in the postal systems of most countries. sometimes sheer laziness too. My husband knows of a Woking postman who was jailed for dumping mail by the bag-load simply because he couldn't be bothered to deliver it on his rounds. Stupid idiot didn't realise that dumping a whole bag-load would single him out him as the perpetrator...

Look up "Sorting Office Theft" in Google... you'll get an idea of the size of the problem in the UK! Add to that the likelihood of items being valuable when sent abroad and the difficulty in tracing the source of the problem and you'll see that it's all too easy for mail theft/dumping to go unpunished.

I will start a rumour here. I heard that "most" mail from the UK to the TRNC goes through a huge sorting office in London. The story is that this office employs a large of Greek Nationals?? Deduce from that where the mail goes, I think thats all bull but who knows?

According to an article in Cyprus Today a couple of weeks ago, the BRS and Royal Mail did a big study to investigate what is happening to post from the UK which is not arriving in the TRNC and it appears that the majority of it is lost in Turkey. It arrives in Istanbul and Royal Mail are able to track it to there, but then it disappears before reaching the TRNC!

I have a relative who used to work for Royal Mail in the UK and he said that they are all instructed to separate Mersin (which goes to Mersin in Turkey) and Mersin 10 (which comes to the TRNC) separately and it goes in separate bags and is loaded separately so it should be easy to idenitfy and offload in Turkey and then load it onto the plane to TRNC. Obviously something wrong in the system in Turkey.

When I had to post a parcel to a TC Friend of mine in TRNC, she told me to send it to her family's address in Turkey, saying it would be much more likely not to get lost and even if it didn't 'get lost' she'd probably get it quicker from there (she visits often) than she would if she had to wait for it to arrive in TRNC.

Msg.23 That is bull. The problem is much nearer home. I have had items which never arrived (or delivered) at my Lapta box which were posted in various countries---USA, Australia, Sweden, New Zealand and of course the UK. Where is the common point---not the Mount Pleasant sorting office!

We've a box in Alsancak and this year we've received letters from the bank and some jiffy bags with small presents in. No cards or ordinary letters at all. Did get some Christmas cards but not as many as we would have expected! We're also hoping that the BRS/rM investigation has done some good and we can expect the odd letter, card and post card to arrive! Dont mind if they're late, just would like to receive them!
