As some of you know, i was involved in a rather bad car accident some time ago, and although i am healed physically, i still have a few issues...ie...overtaking....(is this really neccessary?) Anyway my question is, do you brace yourself for a 'possible' impending crash, ie...hold something and lock on... or do you relax into it?..... Do you tense or do you relax.....? what's the official word....????? DD

I had a 'head on' a few months ago and braced - broke both my thumbs with the impact through the steering wheel. I don't reckon you'd have time to decide what to do when it comes to it.

Maybe i wasn't clear. If you feel an impending crash, should you relax and go with it, or do you brace and hold on to whatever is available....simple question really. DD

If you are relaxed as you rightly say in MSG 6 the muscals and tendens are likewise relaxed so in the event of a collision they do not act as shock absorbers and become 'locked' Relex is the key unfortunatly our natural reation is to tense up

1.Wear a seat belt and get a car with lots of air bags or 2. Don't get in a car & 3. If you can relax whilst about to crash then you are either pissed or asleep

Hi DD, been in an accident lots of years ago. At the time everything seemed to be in slow motiion but regardless don't know if bracing or relaxing was an option. It took me a long time to relax and enjoy driving again but it certainly makes you more aware that regardless of how good a driver you are you have to think for everyone else on the road. I wasn't overtaking and neither was the other driver but at the time (she was turning into a right turn on the main road) she had more or less stopped to give way but she had a standard poodle in the car who distracted her and I swear to God I thought it was a homing missile coming towards me. I tried to move out the way and almost hit a pedestrian. The railings around the carpark 15yrs later still have the impact of my car. Thankfully all injuries apart from shock were not too serious but it still gives me nightmares when I think how close I was to knocking down that pedestrian. Cont.

Know reading some of your posts you have been through the mill but hopefully you are now mentally and physically on the mend. To go back to it I don't really think you have the option, as they say sh** happens and when it does you don't actually know how you will react. Irene

My car was written off after that but I still kept my Datsun Cherry badge. (My first very own car and I still think of it lovingly).

Hi Sam, I think it would be a natural reaction to tense up but I do think relaxing and going with it would be less harmless...hopefully.

I hate overtaking, but sometimes you have to., but my stomach is in knots while I do!! I went through a windscreen when I was 16 and the fear has never left me!! I get very angry when I see a car heading towards me on my side of the road and really bib them as they swerve away. There have been a few accidents outside the new Tempo because of overtaking and crashing into cars leaving the car park.

Luckily I have never been in an accident and I am quite relaxed when driving but I do not take any chances i.e. I do not overtake unless I see my way ahead. I keep calm in the face of danger and I think this kept me out of trouble. So its good to remain relaxed if you can help it. Its really part of your personality and there is not much you can do about it. ismet

Do not tense up if facing a head on. Easier said than done but, if you do so the strain on your ankles, knees, hip, back, wrists, arms, is immense. At least modern cars have airbags to protect the head and chest, but even with them if you tense then you are looking at shattered bones in wrist and upper and lower arms. And always expect the unexpected especially in the KKTC.
