Turkcell 'pay as you go' have just been put to by an outrageous amount! 20TL = 340 units. I think every three months but have gone too international free roam.

As far as I understand it is that after a certain amount of time of non use (3 months maybe) the account gets frozen regardless of any credit left and when the account needs to be used again then you need to buy credit to re-activate but any credit that was left will be added to your new balance. I know of people that have been doing this on a yearly basis.

On Telsim, it is now 90 days (3 months) between "topups" before phone is "half locked" i.e. number locked but can be unlocked by loading more units (may have to contact Customer Service) and 6 months for number to be lost completely. Was 150 days and 360 days, but found out from my own experience that times have been reduced. Possibly Turkcell is same.

Have you thought of changing to a contract? You can keep the same number and all you pay is 15Tl for a new sim card and a 2 TL a month charge. I have set up a direct debit with Turk bank to pay each month.

Hassle free and no worries about topping up and the calls to UK landlines are so much cheaper includes international roaming.

Something to think about?!

How long can you go without using your mobile? I went to Lemar in Karakum and they said as it hadn't been used for 3 months the number had gone and I had to purchase a new sim card for 20 tl. I did this but is this right?

Mr Mac you were given the wrong information by Lemar, sorry.

A number normally has to be dormant for at least 6 - 9 months (no use at all) before it goes into a second dormant state. After a period of about 18 months it goes back into the "pot" for re-issue depending on how much demand there is for new numbers.

Hi Orangekazzie thought that might be the case, the wife went to top up and had not done it before, the phone chap got the security guard to explain to her in english - number gone can't use need to have a new number, £20 for sim + top up So if it is dormant for about 7 months, we still should be able to top up as normal?

hi guys

you number will be barred after 3 months of non use does not matter if u have credits on it, but if u top up within that period you wont loose your number but after 6 months of non use you will loose your number complety and you cant get that number back because it gets re sold, the best thing you can do if you have got a good number or you have used it for a long period is to switch it on to pay monthly all u need to do this is go in to the turkcell shop with your passport and switch it over, then if u have a bank account go to the bank with your contract and set up a direct debit "otomatik odeme" and this only cost 3tl a month standard charge

hope this helps
