Please can someone advise on the suitability of various timbers, for open fires and wood burning stoves? We understand some types produce noxious gases and others cause chimney build-up of gunge, so advice would be appreciated. We have access to lemon, tangerine and almond at present.

Bung it all on, pallets, whatever. As long as the flue pipe or chimney (lined of course) has a good draught you'll have no problems. We mix soft wood with harder woods (logs etc) to get a good hot burn.

you are better off with hard woods like olive and carob - palletts burn too quickly and also tar up your chimney....

Fruit trees are ok too...

Another suggestion:

If you can, lay down next year's wood this year as seasoned timber burns more efficiently.
