neutralnick Ref message 7 'its 90 days, then cross the border into the South and get another 90 days...' Be aware that if you encounter any other problems with immigration then the first thing they will pick up on is your 90 days issued at the 'border' it is optional and if you are found to be negligent on other aspects then they will use the '90 days across the border' against you. Be aware it has happened to a few people. Do your research and do not rely on going across the 'border' to renew your 90 day visa. AJ

AJ - Me and the Mongerford two have been doing it for 4 years.... Absolutely no problems or questions... One thing is for sure, once you get your leg into the residency permit gang, it's hard to get out...

Nick Have you heard of the Petch family? They were doing the same thing as you until they upset someone and then their 90 day renewals at the 'border' were used by the authorities as an easy way to deport them. Whatever other transgressions there were by the family they used the 90 day renewal rather than getting residency and that was their downfall. Do a bit of research about that particular situation and understand that being given 90 days at the border is discretionary and can be withdrawn at any time even after you have got your 90 day stamp. I cannot believe that after many years of you telling people to take their heads out of the sand that now you are doing the same thing. AJ

Hi NN - can you elaborate on "once you get your leg into the residency permit gang, it's hard to get out". We will be applying for temporary residence soon, in order to be able to bring our furniture in so would be good to know the potential 'pit falls'.

My friends have actually been to the police station and asked about this when the rumour started hitting the island last year. They were told due to the fact they do not permanently live here of course they can come and visit the island more than 90 days in one year. BUT they do have to return to the UK due to health commitments and do own a home in each country. They also use Ercan. They were told the 90 days in one year applies to male Cypriot subjects who have not completed their army service and if they do not exceed their 90 day visa in one visit no problem. And if they required more than 90 days in one visit it was best to get it renewed at the crossing/border/green line but also inform the police why they had to overstay in case of problems in the future and a record could be found

AJ if I remember correctly and if I am wrong I am sure someone will tell me, the Petches were working here illegally and they were dobbed in to the authorities by the brits, that is why they were deported, as I say ..if I am wrong then someone will tell me!

Hi Folks, I spoke to a nice man at the Lambousa a couple of weeks ago ,from the British residents Assoc. and he told me that it was only 90 days in any one year !!!! I then asked numerous other people cause that was the first time that I had heard this , they all say different things, but one thing that comes across loud and clear is that you cannot rely on getting your stay extended by just going south and back. Any problems and they will take your first date into account. I know that they change the goal posts every now and again. So maybe its best to check at the police station!! Liz

The 90 day visa is a tourist visa. If you give the authorities any reason to question your presence in TRNC then it is relatively easy for them to show that you are not tourist and therefore withdraw your visa. Harold

All these problems occur because getting a Residence Permit is expensive, entails a medical, and has to be renewed every year. If the authorities made it all more simple (simples??) more people would retire here, = more revenues etc.
