I gave up 6 years ago after 40 years. My lungs were telling me enough was enough! (Emphysema)

About 8 weeks of agony but after that no cravings.

The money I save is amazing!

Good luck!

I was a smoker for 45 years, then I had a heart attack, wow, fear is a great motivator, I have never smoked since. Hang on in there, it will be worth it in the end.

The one thing i tried and found helped enormously was the the little inhalators, you can buy them from the chemist, everytime you feel the urge and you need a little help, just take a toke on the inhalator.

I found the little inhalators and also the nicotine patches very hepful. Having said that, I gave up for 2 years and started again. There is a comparatively new drug on the market which is supposed to give good results. Think it's called Champix, but may only be available on prescription.

I saved fortunes when I gave up and could kick myself for starting again - stick with it.

I packed it in 25 years ago going cold turkey, developed a terrible cough in the first few weeks though and still have the odd urge to light up but refuse to just in case it starts me off again.

Good luck and if you do get a strong craving, go do something different to take your mind off it. Let us all know how you're doing - stay strong

Every time you see someone smoking think to yourself "What a mug" .. 95% of smoking is habit ..

1st thing you do with a cup of tea in the morning .. light up ..

Traffic lights on red going to work .. light up ..

After a meal .. light up ..

Drink in one hand .. Fag in the other ..

Kick all the habits into touch & you've cracked it ..

Good luck ..

I gave up smoking cigarettes 21 years ago - every week I put the money I spent on smoking into an envelope and once a month bought treats. I was horrified at the amount I had wasted inhaling poison and blowing out smoke. Money is a great motivator but I did keep a packet of cigarettes in the house for six months but I can honestly say that maybe because they were there I never felt like smoking them - just looked at the cash in the envelope and thought what it could buy. Mind you after a few months it just disappeared into the housekeeping. Hope this helps

The bus driver announces that smoking is prohibited and punishable by a fine of a hundred pounds.

Suddenly, a baby starts crying.

"Come on kid," the bus driver said "you're only 6 months old, you can make it without a cigarette."

hi

I gave up almost 3 yrs ago just quit from 40 a day to zilch

I have not used patches gum or anything as i had tried all of thoses methods and a few more acupuncture, hypnotism ect.

I found for the first few weeks it was better to keep away from People and places that allowed smoke as the smell made me physically sick

I was told by my mother-in-law to put the money away I did and I have A 42 inch panasonic plasma cash bought and paid for as well as a good deposit on a nice new car as she I think rightly said you would find the money for the "FAGS" so find it to save

How the hell I managed to afford to smoke 40 a day is frankly beyond me and god the only draw back is the weight I have put on everything tastes so much better than it ever used to.

And that is my next thing I must loose the 3 stone I have put on

So I wish you well and hope that you succeed in your quest

Keep away from non-supportive people if you can, smokers may find you threatening as you are no longer sharing in their madness. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, but I do feel strongly about this particular issue. Smoking is playing Russian roulette with your health, in my view. I do appreciate it is very hard to give up, so good luck and give yourself a big pat on the back for every hour you get through. It will be worth it in the long run.

Stick with it Cyprusjoker. I smoked for 55 years, and gave up 6 years ago this coming January 12, at 9 55pm!!!

I started coughing and thought I was choking to death. As I don't like sweet things, I loved smoking, and I had to find something to keep me occupied. I ate loads of melon seeds and avoided going to places where other people were smoking. Now I cannot stand the smell of smoke, but my friends who do are very understanding and usually sit downwind of me, or refrain from smoking near me.

Have I changed as a person? Yes, I think I have. I think I am a more miserable person than I was when I smoked, and console myself with the thought that it has made my family happy. That is being honest,

Like you after 30 years of being a smoker ( 40 a day man) I quit 10 years ago . what worked for me was 3 unopened packets, 1 in my car 1 at home & 1 in my office drawer if i craved a fag the worst thing was not being able to get access to them, I would take out the unpopened packet look at it and say to myself I DONT NEED YOU and put them away.

After about 2 months I forot about them but to me it helped when the craving hit. I also would put the money that i would have spent on fags in a tin in the firts 6 months I had saved ( remember they were £ 3.45 per packet) £ 1280. now that was an insentive in its self

I wish you the best of luck hang in there its well worth it

Cyprusjoker a very well done to you is all I can say, like newlad, I nursed my dear mum through smoke related illness, watched how she could not breath, a horrible time. So glad so many people are supporting you with giving up, Just think how sweet you will smell now, you'll get all the girls scrabling for a kiss at xmas! but dont let that put you off! No nicotine stained teeth, no wrinkes, more money in your pocket for nice goodies. And the biggest bonus of all,... your health,... and for others around you, so keep up the hard work, we are all rooting for you.... lol xx

I now cringe with embarrassment at the thought of just how bad I used to smell from the smoke. What opportunities have I missed by always thinking about when I would next get a puff or being outside for a smoke?

Hector, at least you admit that perhaps you smelt, I am sure you smell gorgous now. Dont think of your lost oppertunities, think of what you have gained, and, perhaps living a lot longer. You also gain a lot of respect from others, people who can now also enjoy a normal life without having to turn their backs or walk away etc. ....

Dizzy ..I know where Hector is coming from.My wife hounded me for years to give up.One of her favourite sayings "If you could only smell how much you stink, you would give up",but like most smokers you cannot or have difficulty in accepting that you do smell. After about 6 months off the weed I really found out what she meant, and I shudder at what other people must have thought of me..

Coachie its a horrible smell isnt it, glad that your dear wife nagged you, she must have thought, or still does think a lot of you to tell you that you smelt. It is a fact that when I stand next to a smoker now I just do not want to get into converse with them face to face.

When I was younger I would not even kiss a fellow who smoked, there that tells you something, its their breath that has this dead smell, yuk.

Better shut up or I will get the 'I love smokers brigade' screaching again!

You know Im so very glad your post was on the top. I was a lifelong hater of smokers. Even though I was a promotion girl for John Players. I started smoking at the age of 59 ish. I have just got in and lit a fag mind you mine are so hard to get here I smoked VOUGE menthol. I am going to try with you. I dont eben like it now it has become habbit. I tried puting carrot sticks in my mouth but with the stress I go back. You all have made me listen to resason and I thank you. Dizzy will I be wrinkle free so I wont worry about botox. Have to tell you though a GP customer of ours said at the stage of my life it would not cause me harm and to take up in later stages of your life can ward of alzimers OH WELL xxxxx

Dizzy 44: Of course I give him support, I'm just saying it's a bit previous, when I did pack it in I found the second week was far worse than the first.

Yes, my good woman loves my smell, well, she's never complained!!

My dear old mum used to be known as Woodbine Lil (her names Lily), she gave up when she was 70 years old, she's now 94......So theres plenty of time for me to think about it. lol

Well I bleeding well not taking up smoking to stop Alzimers as family think I already got it! Its when you are youngish and smoked for years that the creases show around the mouth more, and if you have botox it just makes them look like stretch marks! in other words you get your belly on yer face!

Its not that we hate smokers its just that we dont like it around us,... wont go there tonight as it might upset some and I need my beauty sleep, so nite nite all xx
