Theoretically the judge should not take sides.

Suppose your lawyer sends me a notice and asks for money. If he does not a have a leg to stand on, why should I respond to him. I may prefer to ignore him completely. Then if he takes me to court, why should the judge be on his side? The duty of the judge is to look at the case infront of him impartially and then take sides.

In a Court case all parties are summoned by the Court Bailiff which is enforceable by the Police.

Rather dangerous to ignore any such correspondence. A simple denial of liability should be sent at the least. If you are taken to court you would have to defend yourself or face a judgement against you in your absence.
