dunno about good turkish looks but london's new mayor is boris johnson

whose father recently said "we are all descended from a line of blonde turks"

(believe boris' father's great-great-grandfather was an ottoman ambassador)

Boris is very proud of his Turkish ancestry and rightly so.

I believe the Turks and Brits have a lot in common and it was a sorry day we came to blows at Gallipolli.

I believe Mustapha Kemel Ataturk knew that when he wrote his poem which is posted by the British war cemetery at Anzac cove.

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives

You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country

Therefore rest in peace

There is no difference between the Jonnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side.

Here in this country of our.

You, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears

Your sons are now lying in our bosom, and are in peace.

After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

hi guys

yes you are correct borris johnson is of turkish descendant even thou he was born in the u.s his great grandfather was a famous turkish journalist and a minister of the mehmet the 6th (last sultan) ottoman empire government

lemtich anzac cove was not a british cemetery it is actually a australian and new zealand war cemetery site hence the name anzac - 'australian new zealand army corps' and 25th april is anzac day which in the mid 80's the name anzac cove was reconised by the turkish government

and in actual fact Ataturk was talking about australians and new zealanders in that statement calling them jonnies and saying mothers sending their sons to far away countries because of the british empire had forced these two countries to go to gallipoli who were originally based in egypt aswell a small british batalion the 29th division who tried to take cape helles while the rest of the british army invaded istanbul and samsun

Thank you Ukturk for the correction.

I was aware of the Anzac meaning, I meant that the New Zealand and Australian troops were of British origin, descendants of settlers in those countries.

But you are right about those who fell, I should have named them as citizens of those countries and not Britain.

Naturally UK Turk is quite right about the cemetery being an Australian and New Zealand One.

As Australia was only federated in 1901 many of its and New Zealands soldiers were British born and in many cases British citizens as well.

Having visited the Gallipoli/ Cannakale battlefields a couple of times Turkey has been exceptionally accommodating in allowing and maintaining the cemeteries and Allied war memorials there and deserves a lot of credit for this.

I think its well worth a visit.
