turkey has dropped several hints over the past year or so

that it may have to annexe north cyprus

granted that the talks seem increasingly irrelevant,

what is very real however is the continuing blockade/isolations

and likely rejection of turkey's eu bid whatever the real reason

while this is unlikely to affect the average ex-pat very much at all

we can expect a great wailing and gnashing of teeth from the south

although realistically they can't do much more than they are now,

and cheeky souls would even argue they brought it on themselves

neither the usa nor even the eu are likely to slap sanctions on turkey

for fear of damage to their own interests,

while north cyprus exports may shift easier if labelled "turk mali"

and the roc might face a series of standoffs,

without even the figleaf of an independent trnc state to bully

I'm not wishing this on anyone and it will be as a last resort,

but the ingredients are in place... I'd guess it's already "75% in the bag"

They already are a member of the Arab League.

Turkey is not a member of the Arab League. Turks, after all , are not semitic Arabs, but originally were Central and Steppe ("Altaic") Asians. Ethnically (and we're going way way back here), Turks have closer kinship with Hungarians, Finns and Mongolians than they do with Arabs.

Very interesting LG. Thanks for sharing. I always wondered why the Arabs joined forces with the British against the Ottoman empire during the 1st world war. I always mistakenly believed that the Ottomans (Tukish empire) were Arabs.

not only hve the turks no common ethicity with the arabs,

but due to the previous colonial relationship relations can be a bit edgy at times

the arab revolt was supported and assisted by britain

because turkey had thrown in its lot with the kaiser and the central powers

after the war was won, britain and france continued to occupy the middle east

meanwhile on another question of the moment,

the bulk of the arabs are sunni muslims and are very suspicious of shiite iran

...and if anyone I can't think who... gave iran a smack over its nuclear plans,

most of the arab states would dance with joy

only problem is though, intensely painful though an attack on iran would be,

it is highly unlikely to achieve what it says on the tin...

bit like sanctions against north cyprus really

watched a program on cyprus genc the other night ,where they go to the south and see what is

being sold and how much ,examples shown were ,macaroni produce of turkey ,dried fruits produce of turkey

biscuits produce of turkey ,electrical items made in turkey and the list went on and on,however that

was not what surprised me or the reporter, they sold most items cheaper then the north,i,e an item

that was 5tl on the north

was the equivalent 3tl on the south.

makes you wonder.

Hi Andre

I was watching a programme about the middle east after the war. Britain gave Lebanon and Syria to France. France then handed power to the Christian maronites who crreated greater Lebanon splitting it with Syria.

Britain took Palestine from the Ottomans and Lord Balfour sanctioned the Israeli state which eventually led to Israel the country. We broke all our promises to the Arabs. Christians stick together. Same has happened over Cyprus.

Yes Sunni Muslims have a direct relationship with god, however the shiite religion in Iran means that the people have to negotiate with god through the Imans. Nice way to maintain control and power.

Thats interesting Musin that so many goods sold in the south come from Turkey. I guess the TRNC has to levy large import taxes so that the government can operate. Because of the embargoes I guess they have to be protectionist. A TC friend of mine told me the GC never spend in the north so as to not boost the economy.

Thats probably very true what you say

My TC friends comments were centred around shops and restaurants. He says that GC's bring over their own sandwiches. I have seen GC's eat in Northern restaurants but I wonder if these are a minority. From a GC perspective it makes sense - why purchase goods in the North. The government has resricted the TRNC economy in the hope that it strangles and suffoctates. Lets play a part in this.

I dont live in the TRNC, but if I did I would hope that I would not succumb to purchasing in the South. (not until there was a solution) I would want to help the TRNC economy.

well. there is a free trade agreement between the eu and turkey,

has been for nearly twenty years

as regards shopping in the south, because of the high level of the euro

there are not the bargains that there used to be...

although of course there is greater choice

in particular fruit and vegetables in season are good value in the trnc

with petrol transport property and petrol much cheaper than britain

and on our recent trip we were given three litres of goat's milk f.o.c!

are there taxes to pay on bringing anything direct from turkey?
