There's been a lot of press in Scotland recently regarding a proposed move by Rangers and Celtic into the English Premier League or perhaps an Atlantic league with Dutch and Scandanavian teams... After Rangers last two CL outings (AT HOME) it is clear that something must be done as Scottish football is fast becoming a joke. Gone are the days where the old firm were a real force in Europe. Celtic can't win outside jurrasic park and Rangers have the worst squad i've ever seen play in light blue. As tempting as a move down south would be I just can't see it happening. Only the old firm would benefit and perhaps some of the smaller PL teams who would generate revenue from Rangers and Celtics huge travelling support. But what's in it for Mid table teams? The old firm have fan bases as big and as marketable as the "big four" and with the cash injection the PL would provide could feasibly compete at that level after a few years of adjustment. Subsequently pushing teams like Villa etc

cont... and Everton out of top six positions. This is not to mention the effect it would have to the remaining teams in Scotland... Sure the league would be more competitive but would probably end up resembling the irish league with no real quality sides. There doesn't seem to be any real answer to this problem, but know this... Until some changes are made to grass roots football in Scotland we will continue to fail to qualify for competitions as a national side, our decent home grown players will be of a lower calibre and our top flight league will suffer. A few years ago the SPL was losing players to the PL, now we're losing players to the Championship! What does that tell you!

Good idea to join the PL, but the traveling cost for supporters would be astronomical let alone the time factor to say rangers V portsmouth.

They should have a new 'Super League' of a dozen or so clubs to include some of the European sides.

Maybe if the old firm combined their teams into one they would have more chance, the catholic fans (fenians) could sit up one end of the ground and the protestants (billy boys) the other

Money talks in football. If SKY want it then make no mistake it WILL happen. Rangers and Celtic are huge clubs. The sums they currently receive from tv money is very low. The clubs in the championship receive more in tv revenue than Rangers and Celtic get combined. Both Scottish clubs have a huge wordwide following and do appeal to a massive global audience. When an english club are looking for a testimonial then it is usually one of the old firm who are invited to take part mainly because of the support and the money they generate. On a footballing side with the current squads neither would survive in the premiership however with the money on offer the playing squads would be drastically different to what they are now.

NEWLAD AND RDSTEVE: I agree with you Rangers and Celtic would struggle in the PL with current the squads the have. They probably would be expected to start in the Championship but you are missin the point, they have as big and in some cases bigger national and global fan bases than most of the exisiting PL clubs. I've travelled a lot and i've seen more Rangers and Celtic supporters clubs abroad than anything else. With a cash injection they could bring in the players needed to compete. And although they are both particularily poor this season both Rangers and Celtic have been in European finals im the last 8 years. So they cannot be that bad surely.

Mess 17 spot on with your comments Rangers and Celtic into the premiership ...... it will happen because money talks.... These are both massive clubs with world wide support....second only to Man Utd If Welsh teams can play in the English league then why cant Scottish teams The top 5 or 6 premiership teams would welcome Celtic and Rangers with open arms but the rest would be running scared as it would mean 2 less teams in the league

jimmyboy for a start why should you take priority over teams like newcastle, leeds west brom nottingham forest ( who have 2 european cups ) who are all fighting to get back into the top flight of the greatest league in the world, and does scotland not want to break away from england and become an independant country ? And the world wide support is religion based not because of the superior football they produce !

stevie-d , its not rocket science , they cant play in the prem because their not english or welsh. spl stands for scottish prem league, which is why english clubs cant play in spl. not that any english team would want to play in spl.

ive said for a long while that the league cup should be merged so all the scotish league teams get a crack at English clubs and that way all could benefit north and south of the border from lucrative and random cotests and it would inject interest in the league cup north and south of the border !

yes No1 Iagree Money Talks that why Rangers and Celtic will never appear in the PL they have not got any money to buy their way in Beyond the Fact that neither of them would last a season I have my honest doubts that they would be able to do very well in the championship let alone the PL. Look at the batterings Rangers are shipping at home to second rate teams in the CL while it has been apparent for many a long year that both teams are much better than the SPL due to vast support i think a Euro league will be their only way but again cannot see them living week in week out with the Man U's Arsenal's Real madrid's Barcelona's and Milan's of this world can anybody here hand on heart say i am wrong

Apparently rangers have arranged a friendly with the greater manchester police force. As they are the only people rangers have successfully attacked in europe in the last couple of years !
