The population of the UK will rise from 61m to 71.6m by 2033 if current trends in growth continue, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has said. Just over two-thirds of the increase is likely to be related directly or indirectly to migration to the UK. If the projected increase materialises, the population will have grown at its fastest rate in a century. National population projections are produced every two years to provide an estimate of future population which is used for government planning for pensions and the welfare state.

The latest figures show that if current trends continue: The population will grow by more than 10m by 2029, less than half the time it took to rise from 50m to 60m between 1948 and 2005 The population of pensionable age will rise by 32% over the next 25 years to 15.6m, with the number aged over 85 more than doubling to 3.3m In 2033, there will be 2.8 people of working age for every person of state pensionable age - a fall from 3.2 in 2008 By 2033, the population of England will be almost as large as the current populations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8318010.stm

RE msg 1 & 2: Bill, what's new in your interesting post? What's your point? As a culture pessimist I ask you why things wouldn't go wrong in western Europe? Give me one example of a culture that did not destroy itself or wasn't destroyed by external influences? You and I and others are just lucky to live in the last decades of the (western) European culture - decadent as in the last years of all other disappeared empires/cultures. I'm interested to be contradicted with facts.

Coachie, Before you close the gates improve birth rates among the "natives". It's too hard to maintain living standards when you well below the replacement rate of 2.2 per woman. You know that, aging society, shrinking workforce. Then the easy solution comes and you bring 'em more and more, then you lose control and want to start an "EMMIGRATION POLICY" (guess you meant IMMIGRATION ) Hey! You've forgotten the root cause!

I think that the BNP will become more powerful with arrival of more immigrants, as people get fed up with ever increasing pressure on living space. I dont vote for them, I just think that this will happen. If they get in, they will adopt policies to deter immigration and even encourage immigtants to leave.

Nick Griffin is on BBC's question time tonight. An interesting statement was made by a Warwick University professor in the Coventry Telegraph. A WARWICK UNIVERSITY professor has warned that the appearance of BNP leader Nick Griffin on BBC’s Question Time tonight could be a launchpad for the far-right party.Jim Shields, associate professor in French Studies, recalled the first appearance of far right French politician Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the Front National (FN), on a similar key French television programme in 1984. It could give credence to mainstream political parties’ calls for the BBC not to give the prime time publicity to Mr Griffin despite the principle of freedom of speech. Dr Shields said: “In his autobiography, Le Pen would point to that TV programme as the start of his political rise, calling it ‘the hour that changed everything’.

“If the clock ticking down to this evening on the BNP’s website is anything to go by, Nick Griffin anticipates a similar effect from his appearance on Question Time.” Mr Griffin, in a press release “History in the Making”, states: “Our violent opponents on the far left have promised to lay siege and barricade the studio venue, because they know only too well that this could be THE key moment that propels the BNP into the big time.” Prof Shield added: “In February 1984, when Le Pen and the FN were still almost entirely boycotted by the media, and electorally insignificant, the programme attracted a lot of opposition and large viewing figures. “Le Pen acquitted himself well, under pressure, and dispelled something of his ‘bogeyman’ image. http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/2009/10/22/bnp-s-question-time-appearance-could-be-party-s-launchpad-92746-24987246/#

Re 17 Coachie, "really did mean EMIGRATION POLICY...Do what the Aussies do,no sponshorship for a job ,no entry, simples" It IS called IMMIGRATION policy i.e a policy of a state that deals with those that intend to enter and to remain in the country. When one says EMIGRATION policy it is meant to restrict the ability of their own citizens to emigrate to other countries (restrictions in the former Eastern Bloc, North Korea etc.) In this respect (provided you still insist on your definition) I do not understand how can you convince Pakistan and others to start that policy?

I'm not sure if it is still the case, but they did say if you got everybody in the world to stand shoulder to shoulder, you could fit them all onto the Isle of Wight.

Maqb..You have your dictionary I have mine.Mind you mine is the 1964 edition and it says "emigrate..leave one country to settle in another"..which is what I want the "immigrants" to do when they illegally get here.Turn them round and,and from being an Immigrant they become an Emigrant out of the UK.Does not say anything about restricting any one from leaving there own domicile/abode. cyprusairsoft..could not get out of the RAF or I might have done....

Coachie, Ah! Now I see. It's called deportation or (if they go back to their country) repatriation. We might disagree on semantics although I think we agree in principle

Maqbs..suppose you can call it that as well.If you gave them a few quid and asked them nicely to leave,if not plan B...I was also on about those who are already here illegally and been here for a few years. No amnesty,on the next boat/plane whatever,to where ever they want to go.I do not care what colour creed or religion they are,if they have no visible means of support or job to go to they do not get in.The trouble is its all become to political now with every party trying to catch the votes of the minorites. They all now what should be done and none of them have the guts to do it,till it is tolate..

Yes lets close the gates now cause if we were ever party to real numbers of illegals and legals leeching ( in some cases) of our society then we would be gobsmacked. We have more than our fair share of " toe rags "both home grown and imported , still cant beat shutting the door once the horse has bolted eh Coachie. Re Isle of Wight comment it still stands but only need occupants of Leicester now... Bet the govt is secretly nervous of the arise in airtime and conversation re the BNP ( on question time tonight), went in two locals last night and overheard two seperate group conversations hosting vociferous supporters in principal to some of their policies and were preparing to use thier vote as such.....
