Fear of prejudice meant that Irish Roman Catholic names such as Patrick & Briget almost died out among 19th Century immigrants in Britain. Researchers at Durham University checked 30,000 records, finding the number of Irish names was far lower among second-generation Irish in all 17 English & Welsh counties. Eleven per cent of first-generation immigranrts were called Patrick, which fell to two per cent in the next generation.



Briget fell from nine per cent to one per cent. The trend continues world wide in modern immigrant communities, they said.

Tiggy. What's wrong with 'Paddy'? My neighbour's name is Paddy, everyone calls him Paddy. It's not derogatory in any way.
