Before AJ gets on his AJ soap box and gives the answer 'Take it up with Izzet' we cant discuss it here . I have already done so and can not get an answer. I mean I can not get an answer, literally.

So I bring the question here, how is it that dogs, and shop fronts are allowed as Avatar's and Hippo's aren't.

This will probably result in me having another 100 year ban but what the hell. At least the Sad Crusader can have an easy ride.

The rules tell us that the admins are trying to build a community here and encourage posters to send photos for uploading. Why do people feel the need to be anonymous? I agree if Hippo's avatar has been removed, other pictures of dogs etc should also be removed, but why are people so reluctant to have their photos on the forum?

The reason people are afraid to put their photo's on here is fear of being recognised by some of the nasty people on this site. There is so much back-biting and downright spitfullness on this forum sometimes. It has got a bit better over the last couple of months but even so, it can get very scary. Let Hippo have his Avatar, it's only a bit of fun.

Every piece of information is of use to a criminal. You have given your name, enough information to find your address and phone number in less than a minute and told the entire world that you are going to be away from home for seven weeks. Then in order to assist the burglar you have given him your photograph so that he can nip along to your house on the day you leave just to make sure you do.

That must be enough reason to be discreet on these bulletin boards, surely.

If that is the case, then it is very sad. I would have thought the majority of people are just looking for tips and advice and that most of the comments are merely banter. I enjoy the cut and thrust and love to hear other people's opinions, even if I do not agree with them. I like to hear recommendations for restaurants, businesses etc. and just ignore comments that I find offensive. You can usually tell from the title if it is a topic that interests you, and I personally don't open comments that I think will be of little interest.

Hippo.

I agree.

I sent a pic of a Pink Chilli, but Izzet, politely refused my request. Since then I have seen numerous avatars which a not members photos.

I emailed him on the 10th October requesting fairness for all. All other emails he has responded to. I'm still waiting for a response!

I understand what you are saying, but I also go along with the sentiment in the rules - that the object of the forum is to build a community. I think it is a shame if we have to be so secretive.

Surely a picture of something is better than nothing..it adds a bit of colour to the page insted of boring blue and white with a tiny bit of yellow on the events and stars. just cant understand it, what ruddy harm is it?

To be fair, either the rules must be amended to reflect the current situation or the rules must be fully applied. Hippo has a good point here and should be dealt with properly i.e. one rule for everyone.

Elko,

There can be no other way of dealing with this, rules must apply to all. I personally can't see why people cannot have whatever picture they want so long as they are decent.

Good to have hippo back, at least he is fun, not so serious as a few. Elko you are only a little rebellious and its great.

It should not be an issue if some one does not want a photo up, its called privacy! if folks want their pics up so be it, if they dont so be it. If its to do with building a community this forum, and having pics around, it should be a warning as some one has pointed out, that not every one is a friend! Dogs get poisoned, places get burgled, its a fact of life that every one just is not the same.......

RE msg 1, "Hoppi": (...) At least the Sad Crusader can have an easy ride. (...)

=> For six years now this "Mr. Hippo" cultivates his xenophobe obsession on bulletin boards: me. I don't care. But he has another obsession: his "avatar". And here I do agree with him, he has the right to show the world his "avatar". So, to satisfy this cry-baby, here it is: http://is.gd/4vAVU. My pleasure, Hoppi.

I realise this. I don't think that I have said anything controversial enough to cause a problem. My main UK home is no less secure whether I am there or not. My other UK home would be more difficult to trace. Possibly, I and many others like me, might have a security issue when I am not in Cyprus.

I do take your point about security, but think it is less an issue of discretion and more one of transparency. I don't think I have revealed more about my circumstances than many on the forum, so am not in a minority of one. If I have any problems in the future, You will be the first to know.

Dizzycows "as usual Dutch is nasty"

If you have never met him let me tell you he is one of the nicest kindest people I have met on this island and almost everyone who has met him will agree. If you actually read message 26 DC is agreeing that Hippo should have his avatar back.

The Hippo picture always made me smile too, as does the Turtle one, spot the difference? They are surely preferable to the one of Cyprusair, I assume that is his photo, I find that quite threatening but according to the rules it is acceptable. Oh well, as they say, ours is not to reason why.

Hi dizzycows

I have had a run in with DC before. I do regret the way I acted. I do think that DC can be very direct and unsympathetic in his writing at times which can cause offence. I have also seen him show much kindness on this forum. My belief is that he is probably a very nice guy in the flesh. I have tried to say hello to him at the Lapta market to find out for myself, but I could only see his wife on the stall.

If you had looked at the avatar link Dutch Crusader provided earlier in this thread, you will find that it shows neither Hippo's avatar nor one which he has ever used, but instead more 'dutch' mischief.

The Sad Crusader is very funny

Hippo lays on his back rubbing his tummy

But as you all know our Hans is not well

But I suppose on the state of his memory the Hippo should not dwell

Now as he has got older

The sad crusader has got bolder

A night in armour or is it tin?

Its like his hair, his regurgitation of Hippo's picy is wearing thin.

Now you old dike plugger

As your bones grow old and you start to shudder

Something more original you will have to try

Your intellect and wit, in Hippo's opinion of course are a load of .......

The stage is set, the gloves are on

The bookies are there, the bets are on.

It’s Hippo and Hans, the fight will begin

Who will it be?, who will win?

My moneys on Hans, he’s lean and mean

Not like the Hippo, he’s fat, as we’ve seen

Careful now lads, no hitting below

Keep it clean, or it’s off you go

About two months ago, I e-mailed IZZET together with a picture and asked him to put this up for me.

This picture was not a photograph of me. I got a refusal with no explanation.

I e-mailed IZZET again giving a list of about half a dozen people with photos of dogs, cats, business premises etc. He mailed me back saying that he did not like these, only photos and he was going to speak to all the people concerned and wipe off all avatars except photos. He only removed Hippos.

HIPPO, I am sorry if I inadvertantly caused your problems on this board, but I did try to tell you on the other board, when you thought that AJ had knocked off your avatar.

IZZET< WILL YOU NOW PUT MY PICTURE UP OR KEEP YOUR PROMISE TO KNOCK EVERYBODY ELSE'S OFF THAT HAVEN'T GOT A PHOTO-----PLEASE?

Please may I borrow one of your horns? I believe, when ground down it could do wonders for me when grounded and taken as a tonic! It will grow back!

Sloan

you seem a very trusting soul in these really quite terrible days

People will pick through people dustbins in the wee small hours to try and find any sort of information they can

Hackers hack into people computers with well written spider programs to see if they bank on-line

Old men (paedophiles) pose as children in kids chat rooms and they have a pic of a boy or girl

I think you really need to wake up take your pink glasses off and sadly look at the world as it is a very dangerous place for the naive and trusting

I hope you never have to go through what friends have had it took them 3.5 yrs to prove they were who they said and had not done things ie taken loans ect all because they got rid of an old lap top but even though they thought they had cleaned all their info off apparently it can still be retrived by the type of person you would not wish to meet

They then take out loans mortages ect ect and also passports in your name and it takes for ever to get to the bottom of

AlexF065. Er, what exactly do you mean, Old Men (paedophiles). Why associate Old Men with being Paedophiles? Young men in there 20's have been known to be Paedophiles. Some women also are known Paedophiles.

There is no more info on my profile than many others on the forum. I have trawled through the most prolific posters and had a look. I am not wearing rose coloured spectacles as both my daughter and boyfriend have had identity theft on their credit cards. However, the community aspect of the forum appeals to me and at the moment I would like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I cannot see that anything I have done is going to make me more of a potential 'victim' than many others on the forum. I have got through to nearly 60 with a positive outlook in life. I doubt that I will change now. I am not unaware of safety issues, but could not face going through the rest of my life in an atmosphere of suspicion. You live your life as you want to and I will live mine ... and I'm loving it!!

Ok. Thanks Bill for bringing this to my attention again.

I have now gone over all avatars and removed some 40 pics which do not comply with our forum rules.

Will you eventually be removing those who don't send ANY photo? And where's yours? Surely it would help your case if you did what you are encouraging others to do.

Jeannie - I can see that now. But can assure you that, on my last visit to the site this evening, it was not displaying! Hey, maybe that's why you can't see mine!

Blame Firefox if you like! My original question about 'will they ban anyone who opts NOT to show a photo of themselves?' still stands.

I don't see a big difference between those not displaying ANY photo and those displaying a photo that is patently NOT a photo of themselves.

And Jeannie - I also see no photo beside your posts!

Again, I find myself agreeing (albeit rarely) with Mr Brinsley - ditto his message No. 79 - if my mug shot appeared, the entire system would collapse (possibly never to be resurrected)

Oh no offence taken Jeannie! I just don't really understand what all the fuss is about re the avatar piccies.

I mean unless they were pornographic or in some way offensive or blatant advertising?

You could upload a piccie of anyone on earth and how would the moderators know it wasn't you?

I'm with you - who the hell wants to look at my Fizzog?

RE Msg 74

Izzet why don't you listen to people they don't object to Avatars, some people prefer them why do you continue with this authoritarian attitude that you know best.

You say you are trying to build a community, then listen to what the community wants.

I agree with all who have contributed to this post what is the problem with having an avatar, me personally who has been burgled twice whilst sleeping does not want to show my face on the site. It is not because i want to remain omnimous it may be because sometimes we give honest opinions to peoples threads about the way things are in cyprus. Let me remind you of the Peter Harrell instance did he and his family deserve what happened to them, one slight wrong word on a posting about a business could actually create a problem for that person. i like many of you have heard the rumours about Turkish Mafia and the bored xpats who some of them like to gossip and i personally do not want my phot for all of cyprus to see. Yes Izzet i understand you wanting to build a community on the forum but please get real the world can be a dangerous place.

Yes I have no problem in doing that.

The offence was continual sniping at moderators (your version)

My version 'daring to question your nepotistic attitudes, not listening, lack in consistency of treating peoples posts and off hand deletion of posts that don't agree with your own points of view.

And probably the most serious offence to further question the philosophy of the great Poo-bah Izzet (who didn't even have the decency to answer my e mails.)

I have copies do you want me to post those as well?

OK

Message 92.

Was it really you in the "kebab avatar". The chef was so very handsome! (And so very youthful!).

On a more serious note, and I do understand you have loyalties, albeit sometimes somewhat divided.

Am I correct in saying:

When you had the choice, on the previous board, to choose to either; (a) put up no photo/avatar; (b) put up a genuine likeness of yourself; (c) put up something that was not you, you chose to "represent" yourself as a "Master Chef" (oh no, not let's go there!) at a well-known local kebab house.

Did you really work there?

Why were you sacked? (You were not a Mod then).

Now, I know your grinning. Come on, use your powers of persuasion, make Hippo's day. Persuade Izzet to grant him his wish. You can then put up your "kebab avatar" and make my day too.

Hippo should know why 'Heaton' was banned on the 'BB Forum' - apparently, he had gate-crashed their little, 'exclusive' niche 'club' and 'scored' too many 'hıts' on his controversial postings, from which they were consumed with jealousy!

AJ I have nothing against 'the board' neither do I have anything against you, we have been Cyber adversaries and friends for a few years now.

Cyprus 44 provides a very useful vehicle for disseminating information, it also provides a lot of light relief even my posts about the Sad Crusader are not vindictive, I certainly would p.. on him if he was on fire.

What I do have an issue with is the unequal treatment and inability of Izzet to take on board what the members want.

And I do have an issue about nepotism some are more equal than others. i will not go into specifics but i am sure most people are aware of how some people are treated.

By ceasing to post on the board you accept the status quo and opt out, not a very positive thing to do is it?

AJ: Apparently, 'Heaton' was ımmediately banned from 'BB' after he posted the facts relating to 'Ech' property, a few harmless but risque jokes, and a warnıng to scuba divers relating to the nearest decompression chamber being sited in Lefkoşa. He was criticised by someone named 'Jonno' and a number of ignoramuses, who sided with 'Jonno' and claimed he was harming the diving businesses in TRNC. What he posted was entirely correct, in fact - he was banned simply because several members of 'BB's' 'core elite' couldn't face a few 'home truths'!

Hıppo is one of the 'BB' 'core elite', so I am challenging him to shed some light on this injustice.

I agree with Hippo 100% , I also E-mailed Izzet with a complaint regarding bad language on the board as i recieved no response I tried to remind him through his request re the blog post that Izzet posted, bearing in mind this was just a harmless reminder it resulted in me being banned for 5 days .

I also think that Izzet and Mods are not taking on board what members would like to see on this forum, hence the result of some owners not posting anymore . Hope this helps as it is meant to be constructive critisim

You said, "I would have thought the majority like it as it is!"

Surely you mean "I would have thought the majority liked it as it was until very recently!"

or do you really mean "as it is" with perfectly harmless avatars banned? Where is the logic of trying to make people post their own image when even the "busiest" forum admins don't do so.

In particular, I'm sure most people would think that a Hippo avatar is more agreeable and more entertaining than a picture of the real thing.

No 1 Doydan

As a member i would like to see my personal E-mails being answered by Izzet , a rule against bad language, and more consistancy regarding rules for all members to be treated equally.

It appears that the banning of members can be quite harsh in my case 5 days some thing that was quite trivial . yet other members can appear to flout rules and not appear to be warned or banned .

Also at one time there was a warning on posts for members from Mods to keep in line so to speak, now it appears to come accross as Mods close threads willy nilly so to speak

Thanks for listening No 1 Doyen .

Quite agree Millzer, lots of strange folks out there, if any one has ever been a victim of stalking perhaps most would not want their pics put up. It may sound silly to some, but every one should be aware of this....

Dizzycows i was a victim of a stalker from the late 70's until 1996 / 97 my photograph never appeared anywhere, this took the form of telephone calls to our residential address. Despite at least 4 ex-directory numbers and police taps on our phone this person was never caught. Our sons grew up wondering why they were never allowed to answer the phone.

I have absolutely no problem my photograph being on Cyprus44 i feel 100% safe. I would rather people knew who I was than guess and if they have a problem (which opt times happens) then they have a problem with me. I have nothing to hide or hide behind so why does others have a problem with this?

p.s. I made page 8 today a bit disappointed it never went to page 3 but what the hell! (joke)

I've been posting on various discussion forums for about 10 yrs now. I've never known a site insist that avatars must be actual photographs of the poster themselves.

There are zillions of websites out there offering free artistic and cartoon avatars and a lot of sites actually have their own gallery of them for you to choose from.

My view is that one of the plus points about communicating with others on the internet is that you do form an impression of someone from what they post and do not judge by appearances. Something almost everyone does in 'real life' to some extent.

In the past I have seen some cruel jibes made to posters who'd put up 'real' photos and who were obviously not caucasian, or were overweight and, in one case, much older than most others were.

Why should what we look like have any bearing on what we say, or believe, or have an opinion on ?

It shouldn't really matter whether we want to keep our gender, age, race, or physical appearance from anyone else.

Oleander and lets not forget the cruel jibes that have been focused on "Coachie" because he choose a photograph with a drink in his hand and people have been really abusive to him. My picture shows drink on the table also, what judgement will people make of that. I agree totally with your last 2 sentences but alas there are some people on this board that are not able to relate to these.

HYou know I thank my god that I have had the pleasure and prividgle to meet so many 44 members., Some I admit I was scared at first but without exception I have met and become friends with lovely people. I know there are a few whom I can now call friends for life. I didnt go on pictures only the feelings we had through cybespace. I have never met Hippo but loved his picture. We have tried to help each other and in most cases its worked. Im so very glad of my time on here .

Oh hang on ... there are some websites that insist you put up a genuine (and recent) photograph of your goodself ....

Dating websites!

Perhaps the good leaders are on the lookout?

If we do put up photographs of ourselves on here, do they have to be 'recent'? At this rate, I foresee a rash of old B&W piccies of the members lying naked on rugs when they were just a few months old!

Seriously, I really don't understand this ruling at all. What is the difference between someone putting up NO photograph and putting up a photograph that is obviously not a photograph of themselves (i.e. a hippo) because it can hardly be said to have been done to mislead. I am sure no one thought the poster in question was really a computer savvy hippo.

I personally do not see the problem in having pictures of dogs hippos etc, they, dare I say it creates a community spirit by having them whatever they may be, providing they are not distasteful, it should not make a difference.

Izzet may wish to create a community spirit but surely we already have one? do having pictures of people make it any more or less of a community? I thought the people involved and who contribute to the forum were more important.

People have the choice whether they post a picture of themselves, if they do not want to it is because as mentioned they value their privacy or as others have mentioned they do not want to frighten the rest of us (insert smilie here I do not know how to!)
