Now the hunting season is here, how many dogs will we see laying dead on the roads, those that have run off because they are so sick of being tied up for 10 months of the year getting run over, then there are those that will be shot either deliberately or accidentally by their owners, or because they didn't do their job properly for which they have never been trained...such a sad time of the year here, when I first came to live here I cried everytime I saw a dead dog but I have become hardened and now think thats another one that has found peace and wont be ill treated any longer or starve.

Sorry state of affairs.

I agree Dee but it was wonderful not to be wakened up by the dogs barking at 4.30 this morning as they had all gone hunting with their owners

Just how many will come back though Nurse...I am off to the UK today for a while, not because of the hunting season solely but at least I wont have to see all the suffering for a while. I am sure the usual quota of dogs will get dumped in Arapkoy again.

Have a good day xx

The other problem is that any dog that proves itself to be a good performer will be used for breeding because someone else wants a "good dog"!!! Maybe 1 or 2 pups will find a home, (if thats what you call where a hunting dog is kept) the rest will go.....................on the bloody streets!!! There should be a ban on home breeding and dogs should only be available to these people via registered kennels - neutered before they are sold of course!!

This so called hunting season should be banned, it should also be renamed the 'slaughter and maim anything you can find season'.

Non of the wildlife is captive bred for release for shooting, it is all truely wild and existing on the edge of survival add to this the dog mortality and the whole thing is indefencible.

What century are these people living in ?

BigMart, the hunting association do actually breed birds for release, and because of last years drought they recommended that last years hunt was abandoned, as a lot of the vegetation that is used as shelter for breeding (hares, birds etc) had died off and that the breeding of these creatures had been poor that year. But, it was the GOVERNMENT that refused to cancel as they would have to have re-paid the licence fees, and guess what - they had already spent the money!!

Hunting whether we like it or not, is an integral part of many Cypriots Psyche and I believe that it will be many years before a full ban is in place.

Hi Tootie.....and everyone else

200 metres from any residential dwelling... is the distance that these hunters must be when hunting.

I suggest if you see anyone nearer you report them to the council (don't forget to take any car registration numbers)!!!!

Last year we had to bring our five year old daughter into the house because they were shooting so close. Didn't dare pop our heads round the corner to have a look because these guys are just nutters... every year somebody gets killed or injured.

I think by law min distance from main road or residental area is 500m, if anyone shooting or hunting closer then you can complaint. It may be waste of time.

I agree with adagirl message 11.

I think rather than wear camophlage clothing they should all wear flourecent orange bullet proof vests and helmets..... was it last year that a dog trod on the gun and shot his master in the leg? What a dangerous pastime.

Cyprus Today Saturday, Rev Walker (sports?) made a very cogent comment about the consequences of hunting on the island.

He was spot on.

Message 24,

What a load of crap.

Sport ?? Blasting any living thing, edible or not, if you call that sport I think you ought to have a long hard think about what sport is.

As for the 'we were here before you' argument, perhaps the Greek Cypriots ought to try that line with you.

The government should ban hunting immediately and, instead, direct these morons to play 'Paintball' on the Mesaorio Plain, using lıve ammo!

message25:: why must you lower the tone of the thread with your posting.and dirty lanuage.

i never said we or i where here first,i said, always remember.the guns and hunters where here well before you,is that not true?

if it is,then respect the people who wish to hunt,as it happens there are already to many birds messing on properties, patio,s and the like, not that this is a reason to hunt,we hunt or shoot because we enjoy it and are responcible.

some drivers on the road are not responcible, but does that mean we should ban the use of cars.

more people are killed on the roads ever year than people killed by guns or hunting.and by drink driving, should we stop you from having your pint also.

"and by drink driving, should we stop you from having your pint also. "

Actually, Yes, thats why its against the law to drink and drive.

By the way , what do people hunt. The wildlife is not exactly abundant, with the exception of birds in the towns.

I am less concerned with people enjoying hunting in whatever country, if its for pest control or for eating, than I am with a lot of hunters who appear to do very little hunting but a lot of killing.

"the guns and hunters where here well before you,"

I could say the birds and animals were here long before you.

They have bear baiting in Pakistan, surely if I moved there I should be entitled to air an opinion on that, regardless of how long it had been going on.

In Malta, of the birds killed every year ,over 100,000 are endangered species they are en route between Europe and Africa. ,These birds do not belong to the Maltese ,they as with most of natures creations belong to Earths future generations .

I was working in Malta in the early sixties - same 'hunting' mentality as in TRNC & RoC - none of them would know or understand the meaning of the word 'hunting'. If they want some real hunting, try wild pig hunting, or deerstalking in New Zealand - but since most Cypriot hunters never venture far from their vehicles, an NZ hunting trek, sometimes involving tramping for a week, wouldn't suit them - too much physical effort required for these lazy, ignorant egoists!

Agree Tenakoutou.

Hunting is where people stalk their prey.In deer hunting ,the deer often gets away when a mistake is made by the hunter in stalking ,noise ,wind direction and smell. Also you are not allowed to blast away at every animal that crosses in front of you.Deer hunting is also used to cull and due account is taken of ratio of male to females killed.

Shooting is a different sport, clay -pigeon,grouse etc, in many countries they confuse the two.

As you probably know from Malta and as a friend of mine in ROC confirmed, what takes place is not hunting ,merely the setting up of fixed anti aircraft batteries, that kill anything that enters that killing zone.

On the point about dead dogs, why are dogs needed. Retrievers and suchlike dogs are used to retrieve the kill from awkward areas such as lakes ,rivers ,marshland,or to flush out the prey from high grass and forest.Hardly applies here, where the hunters stay pretty close to their cars and roads.
