I've just taken the dogs out after the 'Slaughter any living creature you can day' seems to have finished and where they have stopped for a picnic there are Coke cans, beer bottles, plastic bags full of rubbish where there was none yesterday.

What is wrong with these people, are they blind ? stupid ? can someone please enlighten me.

Please Nurseaweful, don't try and say it's tourists this time.

Well the mainland turks tend to get blamed for the litter dropping but it just doesn't ring true as the hunting brigade can't all be mainlanders. Can they? One would think pride of the environment would be priority seeing as the TRNC is only 30 years or so old.

I live on a communal site and the maintenance company do a good job cutting back the shrubs/hedges in the gardens. Then they throw it over the wall in the field at the side for everyone to see. To add to that we had a new pump fitted and as the guy walked off and said goodbye he lobbed the empty box in the field also. What are they like!

Hi all,

We have recently had 21 new apartments built on our complex, all the cardboard, polystyrene and plastic wrapping off the kitchen appliances has been dumped in the hedge and the ravine behind the block.

I would like Medview Homes to come and clear it, as they were responsible for this build. They are all as bad as each other and there is builders rubble down every ravine I have seen in the TRNC. I thought there was a new law to stop this kind of thing happening? I am naming and shaming Medview Homes in the hope they will come back and do something about it.

I love it when you have workmen in to put in a new appliance you ask if they can take the old one away they say no problem, then when you go out its dumped on the corner

He is sat there reading Saturdays Cyprus Today the following morning the nice scarecrow has gone but the settee remains. So does the tyre tree the mattress plant along in the other field the armchair bush

A couple of weeks ago had 10 days in Turkey litter free drive from Antalya to Izmir Cannakale Istanbul

Education and policy from the top London used to be a tip with graffiti I now find it a very tidy city it can be changed with a will and facilities provided

A couple of our neighbours in Arapkoy threw their garden waste onto the common land part yesterday and they are brits...probably to mean to drive to the bins that are everywhere after all it would have cost all of two bits, sorry dont know what the bits are called. Bloody disgraceful.

We live by the side of one of the ravines, a lady on the other side is always throwing rubbish in there, crossing the road from her bin to do so. I mentioned it to one of our neighbours, a policeman, the response was a smile and a shrug of the shoulders, how can they not see what they are doing to this beautiful place.

If you dont like litter and rubbish dumping all over the place, you should go back home, nobody forced you to invest and live here.

As the tourists are only here a short time ,its none of their business either. The same applies ,nobody twisted their arms and forced them to come.

Its a young country, so you cant expect people to learn not to drop litter overnight.

Fed up with this whinging, remember "when in Rome, litter as the Romans do"

Hi girne29,

I get your real message, you don't want us in the TRNC. So can you tell me what will happen to all the new shops and businesses that have been opened by your relatives and friends, to milk us Brits of our hard earned cash when we go home? I think you need to take a reality check grumpy old man and get your act together, stop being so damn lazy and clean up your mess.

Sorry Folks

You didnt get it.

I was stating the arguments that are thrown in my face when I come out with anything like that.Thats why I said read my message again!!

I was being ironic.

Anyone who knows my posts from the past ,know that I lean the other way and hate the remarks like that ,excusing the litter amongst other things ,by telling us all to buggeroff home.

I was not showing what I feel but rather second guessing the form that defense of the mess will take.

Apologies for trying to be clever and failing.

To clarify.what I think is.

Do NOT ,justify litter by saying its a young country .Doesnt take 30 years to learn

Do NOT take tourists for granted and think litter has no effect on return visitors. Its probably the No 1 complaint from visitors.

Do NOT ignore the objections of people like myself who have invested here, if you want us to stay and others to come.

And lastly do NOT throw litter as the Romans do,If I wander into a pig sty it doesnt mean I have to a

No a pology necessary, my fault.

As for the litter I've been banging on for years.Just gets depressing.

Its not even the dumping, thats bad enough,of building material,.But what is worse is where the facilities are at hand and still people chose to drop litter.Like leaving beer bottles under a seat in the town centre when there is bin feet away.Totally unnecessary, one would think its almost done out of spite.

Its dead easy really people drop litter because they can. If pride in your environment wont do it then fear of penalty will have to.Cant even keep an environmental area like Turtle Beach litter free. Its no excuse even when the bins are full and left unemptied. When we were children ,as a family we were taught to collect all our litter when at a picnic and putting it in a bag ,either take home or until found a bin.Suppose education will eventually turn things round ,like when had a similar though not so bad problem in the UK.

I think you are all being racist. It is obviously part of the rich local culture to enrich the environment by sharing your rubbish with others. It's a form of recyling. As they say 'one mans (I mean ' persons' of course) sh.. rubbish is anothers gold' or something like that. We should embrace diversity and celebrate the local culture & customs by simply throwing our rubbish any where we can see the locals gathering to show our willingness to integrate.

Hector - couldn't agree with you more, except for the fact that I don't, at present, adhere to the locals' way of life (i.e. litter throwing). But, hey, you're never too old to learn.

I feel it wouldn't take me too long to get into the swing of things. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Whilst at it (litter dispensation) I could possibly "Cyprify My Driving" - a knack that has long escaped me, but I do feel that, after 20 odd years of visiting the Island, I am, sort of, getting the hang of it now. I am up for embracing local culture and customs - indeed, I am all for it. So, as a bit of a novice, how do you suggest I start to integrate? Would you start by simply littering (I was brought up in a Keep Britain Tidy era) or should I ease myself into it a little easier? Would appreciate your comments.

Thanks.

Jeannie - message 32 - you could start by giving a price for a job, taking a deposit, saying "I come back after 2 days", then disappearing. That should get you into the swing of things!

Thanks for the tips, chaps. It's a little difficult to know where to start really, as there are endless possibilities. I suppose the litter is as good a way as any to start with. I am a smoker, so I suppose throwing fag ends out of the car window onto the tinder-dry, litter strewn verges would be good? I could possibly incorporate this with 'driving the NC way', i.e. eating a kebab whilst smoking a fag, mobile phone stuck to my face, gesturing wildly to my companion in the passenger seat, overtaking on blind bends and all the while having my right elbow stuck out of the window? Have I forgotten anything?

kaiserphil - I take your point on this. However, this may take a little longer to perfect. We have been reasonably fortunate in this regard (so far).

So much to learn, so little time

You could practice your 'Cyprus shrug' or sit around drinking coffee & chatting to your colleagues during working hours or even better giving people that 'I don't understand English' whilst internally smiling & walking away.

No fag ends,Fire!

Why not start with going into town at night and dropping just one or two bits of litter, unlikely anyone would see you and you are at least getting used to littering.

Over a period of time you can move onto daylight littering. I know you will feel uncomfortable at being seen but after a while you will get used to no one bothering and your subconscious will slowly take on board that it is normal practise. Once your brain accepts that ,it will be like a liberation and you can joyfully go for picnics and leave your mess for others to pick up.

When you order kitchen units tell the fitter to leave the old ones for you to dispose of, why give him the pleasure. You wont have far to go anyway, just to the end of your road or the field on the other side .

Almost forgot, when putting your rubbish into wheely bin, you must, and this is really important, leave the lids open so that as they near full, the cats and wind can strew the mess about.

How about going for a drive and then leave your dog(s) behind? Even better if it has or about to have puppies. Especially welcome in ex pat enclaves where such generosity is welcomed. This gives endless hours of fun for the said ex pats who love to form clubs (aka animal welfare).

I was just pointing out that the Cypriots are not the only ones dropping litter.

Where do people put their rubbish if the refuse collectors don't or can't get down their street? They dump it where they can!

Yes the Cypriots are a nightmare with their dumping policy but until the government or the police start fining everyone for this there is no near solution.

Hi all.

kaiserphil - no; unfortunately not, as am currently in UK and it tends not to go down too well here, but I suppose I could always make a start. I'll pop into the bank tomorrow for a 'trial run', after all, practice makes perfect.

Queen180 - glad you got a chuckle out of my observations. Something else I forgot to mention, but did post it on another thread, and that was drawing attention to the (lack of) use of INDICATORS! Yes, those little blinking lights on the front and rear of cars. I certainly advised that the use of these should be kept to an absolute minimum - keeps other drivers on their toes. I will be investing in a huge pair of wrap-around shades in time for my next visit and will definitely be looking into ghettoblasters - don't know how they slipped my mind, but, as I said, so much to learn
