Found this quite amusing as we are guilty of using some of these from time to time!

Not a phrase, but something I find very annoying is people who pronouce the letter H as 'haitch', rather than 'aitch'.

....starting a sentence with 'I mean'......or trying to justify something by saying ' I'm sorry but....' when they're clearly not sorry and generally there's nothing to be sorry about. Also 'we shall see' said in a knowing way (when the sayer has no clue what the outcome will be of any particular situation arising in converasation - usually the CyProb). Rant over (for now)

"My lips are sealed" (suggesting that the speaker has insider knowledge and that you know bugger-all).

When you've pointed out a problem to a builder/worker and they say 'no problem'. What they mean is that it isn't a problem for them and they have no intention of fixing it. Yarin also means any time in the future but not today.

AND a final gripe from pedants corner Baspinar...... "They"... as in "They" are coming to fix the pipes in the morning. Who the blazes are "They" - the Massachusets Institute of Technology? or "They" have made significant advances in the race for a cure for cancer - would "They" be the pikeys who have moved into the apartment upstairs? - I'm sure they'd be most grateful for the dosh from the Nobel Institute.

Verbally: using "of" instead of "have" as in "I should have...".

There is no verb "to of" - though I stand to be corrected by Pedants' Corner, Başpinar - please note the apostrophe - if I'm wrong.

Message 59 - this drives me mad, too.

Also, "I'm fed up of............" rather than "I'm fed up with................"

Apostrophe also duly noted - why don't people get this and also continually use the "wandering apostrophe", i.e. potatoe's, tomatoe's.

El Gordo - the corner belonging to Pedant...... Pedant's corner. Terribly sorry for the howler. As you are now welcome to join me beneath the only surviving lamppost (lampost?) in Baspinar it has become the plural. Pedants' corner. See you soon old chap.

Jeannie - thanks, although my initial offering was also correct in that the apostrophe "isn't normally needed if the noun is in the adjectival, rather than possessive sense"..... eg Builders Backside. Just a matter of taste I presume ;0)

Many thanks for your reply.

No, we definitely wouldn't want plagiairsm on here - haven't we got enough to contend with?

Interestingly, we have a young doctor working at the GP practice where I am a humble medical secretary. He informed me recently that William Shakespeare plagiarised the entire works of Christopher Marlow (?spelling). He apparently attended the same college at Cambridge University.

Sorry all - I am making a very feble attempt to sound remotely intelligent here (unsuccessfuly, I fear?)

S - how goes your jetskiing?

I'm thrilled to be invited to join such an august body.

Is there a Boss Pedant; or is he styled Top Pedant or Pedant-in-Chief? Is he fairly or just plain unique? Can I apply for election thereto?

With all due respect how is the constitution framed? Don't worry about it if it's not in place yet but at the end of the day it's not rocket science to make one. To be fair, personally, myself I'm the sort of person who can normally work without one. Having said that, I mean, sorry, but in my honest opinion we probably do need one. Certainly, the Trouble-and-Strife thinks we're havin' a giraffe if we don't so we probably need at least a quorum of free because as we know no one is perfect and even with the best will in the world this is Cyprus after all.

Having said that, to cut a long story short, let me put it like this: I'm not bothered.

Keep this to yourself but the association will be absolutely to die for.

Have a nice day,

Peter Sellers' 'Party Polıtıcal Speech' was brilliant:

'My friends, in the light of present day development, let me say, right away, that I do not consider existing conditions likely. On the contrary, I have always regarded them as subjects of the utmost responsibility, and shall ever continue to do so.

If what I am saying is challenged, then I am only too ready to meet such a challenge, for these are problems that are facing us all - we must build; but we must build surely!'

Asking how a patient is in hospital and being told "Comfortable" when you know jolly well they are anything but comfortable. The truth please hospital staff.

The penalty clause is your safety net.

TRNC law is based on UK law (so don't worry).

"Must of" - presumably a mis-transcription of "Must 'ave", itself a contraction of "Must have"

jimbo, msg 83, please note!

"I know" or "yes, yes" - used as an inerruption while you're talking. At least give the person a chance to blinkin finish what the're saying!!

When interupted like this I normally just shut up mid sentence, after all, what's the point in continuing?
