Having big problems with one of our neighbours as we have erected a garden shed. She has complained to the Beledysie who are saying we should move it as she is an old lady! The shed is, in our opinion, in the ideal spot to be least obtrusive to all our neighbours but this lady just doesn't seem to like having foreign neighbours and complains about anything & everything.

Does anyone know if there is a rule regarding the siting of temporary wooden shed i.e. how close they can be sited to boundarys? Would be grateful for any advice before we go line the solicitors pockets again!

You say the Belediye said "should" not "must". Ask them if you need permission - if they say you don't, then that is that.

Just a suggestion........Ring Michael Lain on 0553 8668381 or 0533 8655203.

He supplies & fits sheds etc. Might be able to advise although it sounds as if your neighbour could be the problem not the shed.

Good luck.

It beggars belief to me that there are such 'laws' regarding the siting of a garden shed in TRNC, particularly when you see some of the building work that has gone on over the years. Would agree with you that it sounds as if the lady certainly complains about anything and everything (and will probably continue to do so, wherever you decide to put the shed).

I think TRNCVaughan has hit the nail on the head.

Good luck.

Actually it was Michael Lain that erected the shed! ha ha

Have been given an officious looking piece of paper this morning from an obnoxious 'jobsworth' council man in a blue shirt. All in Turkish so am struggling to translate it. When I asked him if he could explain it to me he said "no english - turkish! You in Cyprus now!" nice chap eh!

Sending this back to the top in the hope that someone has encountered a similar problem & can give advice - if not it's down the solicitors this aft and a hefty bill no doubt. According to the 'notice' I was served yesterday I have 2 days in which to move my shed or they can fine me! Can this be right? surely they would have to go through the courts?

Personaly I think they are just trying it on in the hope that I will comply and have the shed moved - they don't know me very well! watch this space cos the shed ain't moving unless a judge says so!

She wants to consider herself fortunate that it is just a shed.

My neighbour has recently constructed a large covered dog shelter/run incorporating my boundary wall. The dog is no problem but the owner is less than efficient when it comes to cleaning up the faeces. Consequently the smell, especially in the hot weather, is appalling.

Well Fiona it would seem that if you complain to your local Beledysie they will order them to remove it - but then I believe you are British & if they are locals maybe it doesn't work that way round???

Thought I'd give you all an update (and maybe a laugh!) Wednesday - Belledyesy came round (with police) & put red & white stripe tape around shed & container style seal on door. I removed it as soon as they left - got call to go to Lapta Police station - wasn't excactly 'clapped in irons' but told off 'turkish style' Thursday - Belledeyesi came round (with police) & put more red & white striped tape round shed & seal on door. Thursday late am - went round Minister of Interior Planning Officer - asked him for planning permission ('project' as it's apparently called here) was told for wooden shed 2m x 4m with no foundation you don't need planning permission - it's allowed!!!

Since found out that whinging neighbour is a relative of the Lapta Mayor! Wished I'd known that in the first place - probably wouldn't have bothered buying the house never mind the shed!! on the bright side - his term of office is nearing it's end so maybe in six months or so I can get the red tape removed.

I'd be more concerned that this would cause a big problem with my direct neighbours. Much better to get on with your neighbours if you can.

As for them not liking having 'foreign neighbours', there's lots of folk back in the UK who don't like having foreign neighbours too!

Well Patricia from Larnaca (msg 16), I get on very well with my neighbours both here & in UK and I have it on on good authority from the deputy Mayor that this 'lady' doesn't like anybody!

So actually if you've nothing constructive to add to this thread might I politely suggest it's none of your business!

kind regards, Maggie

Quick update - Last friday the Belediyesie cut our water off _ yes, we have paid our bill, in fact I always make sure I'm in credit. Turned out they had cut it off (removed the tap & meter) because of the shed business!! Can you believe that? After a heated discussion in Belediyesie office followed by a visit from one of their 'officers' we phoned the solicitors (Naomi Mehmet) who informed them that this was illegal and they would issue a writ if they didn't reinstate it. 4pm two workmen came and replaced the tap & meter. We now have water.......but for how long?

I have Ian Shepherd from Cyprus Today calling in the morning - let see what a bit of publicity does!

Gosh, what a nightmare.

As you say maybe a bit of publicity will resolve the problem for you.

Good luck.

Do you hire out the basooka or do I need to take out a 'contract' on the offending persons?

If it was happening to me Maggie I would be seriously thinking of moving to Brae! At least they talk a form of English there.

Ian (Msg 23)

Wouldn't happen in Brae Ian - nobody would mind a peerie shed! and if they did I'd have the Proculator Fiscal down on them like a ton of bricks! (Feck might speck aboot me though!)

Many thanks to Sandra & piggy for sending me the article - not entirely accurate but I love the last sentence "this municipality will do whatever is necessary to uphold the law" ha ha including breaking it! (cutting off the water)

Maggie and Bernie - you posted this 'Thursday late am - went round Minister of Interior Planning Officer - asked him for planning permission ('project' as it's apparently called here) was told for wooden shed 2m x 4m with no foundation you don't need planning permission - it's allowed!!!!!'

I assume your shed is smaller than 2 x 4 m then if you still have a problem ( there are definately rules wşth regard to height too of shed and of course a concrete base presumably constitutes a foundation ) hope you sort out problem soon - but looks like you may have to move shed to comply with these regulatıons

Hmmm, did anyone read the article directly above Maggie and Bernie's article in Cyprus Today regarding, and I quote, "$10m college being built without planning permission in Lefkosa".

I wonder if the Beladeysi will be putting tape around this particular project!!
