there are presently disagreaments as to the percentage of land ownership in cyprus, with GC saying TC own as little as 18% while the largest percentage claimed by Tc is 26%. While it is common knowledge that Tc do not own a large percentage of land any where in cyprus but own chunks of land in different areas of cyprus, NC presently has 36% of cyprus. has anybody given a thot as to what would happen if the talks fail and both parties agread on particion. am sure the GC wouldnt be as generous as to give TC what they do not claim to have. hence land return is inevitable..... aproximately 30% of NC is alot of land. what happens to ex pats who bought houses in land they mite give back? am thinking 30% is the size of famagusta....so keep this is mind. just somthing we should all ponder over?.

"if the talks fail and both parties agread on particion" A slight contradicition I think here. If the talks fail the status quo will reign. If the talks come to an amicable solution then it will be just a matter of redrawing the green line through undeveloped (to the south of the Lefkosa to Gazi Magusa main road) and farm land to give the Greek Cypriots the percentage of land that both sides agree too. No expats or other none Turkish or Cypriot Turkish nationalites will suffer to any great extent and then everyone can live "happily ever after". Years ago there was a plan to actually give back parts on the western edge of the TRNC but it failed to materialise.

Just a thought! A large percentage of Cyprus - like the mountain ranges and all of the coast are/were public land! Not owned by specific people but by the country or the government in power. When the run up to 74 happened the Island was a single unit but now it is two parts who is claiming the right to own the coastline and the mountains? The percentages in question seem to have been changed to include everything from mountains to coast and have not taken this into account. Could it be that the land owned by specific people, either TC or GC, will no longer show the actual percentages and that the GC now claims all land to belong to them because they were the sole government in power at the time of 74?

Partition will be accepted by the UN if/ when what is agreed at the settlement talks are voted down or if/when the talks collapse. A line will be drawn under the Cyprus Problem and everybody will move on. As far as the UN is concerned its the last chance saloon. The embargo will be lifted by UN, and EU will follow ,For the EU to do otherwise would be an empty gesture to placate the ROC. ,

Grey You are reading it right.Only what I think, If no settlement ,logically there are only two things that can happen. The situation stays as it is, or partition. The UN will bail out ,having spent since 2002 in talks ,will decide that they are flogging a dead horse. It will be left then to the EU to to keep the situation as it is and keep enforcing the embargo and political isolation, and also imposing continued punishment on Turkey at the behest of the ROC. As these punishments were to induce the TRNC to rejoin the ROC and and to encourage Turkey to assist in this, and an attempt via negotiations had been made, then the EU might consider that it would be wrong to penalise only the TC side for talks failing. An even stronger case for lifting the isolation would be made if the talks didnt fail but the voters in either North and South or both voted No on what had been proposed. The EU would have to accept the democratic will of the people and move on from there.
