Do you need a current emissions test certificate when you go and tax the car?

Also, what are the opening times for the tax office at the moment?

We taxed our car last Friday and you do need a current omissions test and I know the AM opening hours are 8.30 - 12noon. They do open in the afternoon but I do not know the times sorry.

The man that served us was really fast and only glanced very fast at our documents and it was cheaper than last year too.

Your emissions test certificate should run in conjuction with your M.O.T. certificate, both last for 3 years on a normal domestic vehicle (1 year for commercial vehicles), therefore if you have a current M.O.T. certificate and your emissions were done at the same time you will not need a new one.

İf your M.O.T and emissions are due you can bring your car and documents to us and we will do everything for you, including the car road tax while you wait, we will even provide tea and coffee!!

For further information please telephone 0392 232 4848/49 or 0533 845 1638

Tiga,

Having just completed my Tax, MoT, vehicle change of ownership and emissions, I went to the police station (Girne) first to find out what was needed. Was given loads of help but on the emissions side I was told that the emissions certificate lasts for the length of the MoT on Petrol vehicles but that on Deisel vehicles it is an annual requirement even on a private (domestic) vehicle.

Just wondered where you got your info from?

That sounds like a great deal Tiga.

The mot and e.test are 18 months adrift of each other as they bought the emissions test in before the car's 3 years were up - for the mot. So my tax is due, but my emissions test is 18 months old, I've just had it done as I was told by the test centre that you need one every year.

Are you saying that is not the case? There has always been confusion over the length of time the e.test valid for.

We have been in the car business since 1996 and deal with these matters on a daily basis, but in light of your enquiry we have just re-confirmed with the M.O.T. headquarters in Lefkosa that domestic vehicles whether petrol or diesel only need emissions testing and M.O.T certificates once every 3 years, however commercial vehicles do need to be tested annually. Many people who have bought vehicles from us, or elsewhere, use our services for all matters concerning the above.

Best Regards

Thanks Tiga, yet another case of the Police not knowing what is legally required! Thanks again.

renewed mine last Friday, gave him log book and emissions test, he didn't ask for anything else. He didn't ask for the emissions test but I'd just had it done so it was with log book. 10% cheaper than last year. In and out in 5 minutes.

Emission tested January 2009 .. Mot tested August 2009 ..

Tax due 31st March 2010 ..

Do I require an emission test in January 2010 .. I was under the impression this had to be done annually

Just got back from the Tax Office in Girne.

MOT dated 15/08/2008

Emissions test dated 26/11/2007

Car tax expired 31/10/2009 - renewed it today, no problem.

I stapled the emissions test certificate to the back of the MOT certificate, and she barely glanced at it.

- And this will make you green with envy.......

Cost 60.19 TL ! (Car is an old Vitara, first registered 1992...)

She asked for 61 TL, but neither of us had any change, so she let me off with 60 TL - God alone knows how they balance their tills!

Tiga, thanks for confirming that the emissions is 3 yearly and not as we were informed yearly.

Talking of road tax it really gets up my nose that last year we had to make an additional late payment charge as we were not in Cyprus when the tax fell due. On top of this it was back dated to when the tax lapsed which is fair comment but we are only in Cyprus for maybe 5 months in total yet have to pay a whole years tax there is no off road option, perhaps it would be more cost effective to rent a vehicle.
