I can't stand it that every TC can play backgammon (and many seem to do it all day long...) - and I cannot play the game. But, again, help from the Internet - if you should have the same frustration: http://www.google.com/search?q=learn%20backgammon&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Anyone wants to play on line?

Not sure the rules are the same on the net as they play here. I played on the net before and it changes when you come to take your discs off but apart from that it is the same rules. I will check this site and see if it is the same.

I learnt to play from the game already on most computers, it is internet backgammon but you will not know your opponent and you can play beginner, intermediate or pro. it is very easy to use and the game will not let you make any wrong moves. this is ok for learning the basics but nothing beats the real thing, if you would like a game anytime DC let me know.

If you don't know where it is on your computer, click on start, all programmes, games where you will find internet backgammon and various other games.

I don't mind playing the game now and again but never two sets in a run, it becomes so boring. Itried playing it on the internet but did not enjoy it. Part of the fun is to get at your opponent by words!

I just LOVE playing backgammon but with real people. There is nothing like slamming down the pieces in true Mediterranean style, and seeing the look of frustration or joy on the face of your opponent. So, sorry D.C., I say 'good luck' with the internet, but I would rather give you a game face to face somewhere! I always have a set in the car.

I have been an addict for 20 years ever since learning to play at Polis (Marion) in the South! How about a Backgammon Club to complement the Chess C;lub?

Hi Hans

I learnt to play backgammon years ago in Cyprus, belive it was called tavli (not with the doubling dice, not sure if that was part of the game there) - would be delighted to play in person when next in NC.

From several players in this thread I understand that eye and verbal* contact during backgammon is very important (?). Would there be enough interest to start a club?

* Ismet, should that be in Turkish or is English allowed also...

If there is no interest in a club (too bad) - is there someone out there who can give me some private lessons? (If possible between Girne and Lapta).

I go along to the chess club and would enjoy learning backgammon if it could be brought in along side the chess?

A friend - who says he's good at the game - has offered to teach me backgammon! He even offered to teach a small group. Thanks Steve!

So. Please reply here whether you're interested in lessons or in a backgammon club (Alsancak Backgammon & Chess Club? ABCC?) - or in both.

Let's see what happens in this thread for a couple of days and then act!

RE msg 13, mikelapta: I think we could start on a Tuesday (will ask Guido today). If there are too many players for chess or backgammon we could find another day or another venue.

Tavla boards: good to mention it; as your "temporary secretary" I'll make a note.

I would certainly join the club and teach you all how to play it if I lived over there. The first rule of the game is to demoralize your opponent and force him to make a bad move. Apart from that it is really a game of luck. When you throw good dice you talk and when you throw bad dice its the other side's turn.

I have a record of throwing doubles for 8 consecutive times. Now the probability of doing that is one in 1,679,616. When you throw doubles it counts twice i.e. if you throw say 3x3, you can move your pieces by 3 four times.

I too would like to join a club and am willing to help people learn the game, will it be open to females as well because my missus wants to join.

Another of my favourite games that people find hard is cribbage, I have a board and cards if anyone wants to learn that as well.

I've talked to Guido and it's no problem for him to have a mixed club (chess and backgammon) on Tuesday afternoons. I'll get back to interested people next week.

A thought: how many hours will it take to learn the basics of backgammon?

The basics are easy, like Mike says you get better with practice and there is an element of luck involved with the dice.

I can play cribbage and infact am considered quite a good player so I could teach somebody if they could teach me and others to play backgammon, in other words I would very much like to join up with others if they are thinking of starting up something. Perhaps as suggested already this could be kept at the top to see how many others are interested.
