Hello I just wanted to verify if any of you shared a similar experience: I was crossing to the south at Metaham and showed my EU ID card at passport control. I am aware that ID cards are enough for entry in Turkey and TRNC. However as I did not have the little paper slip they stamp, when asked I said I did not have it because it was with my passport at home. At this point I was denied to leave TRNC because I was told the law states that you must leave the country with the same document you entered.... I insisted and explained I was told ID card are OK, and stood there for a while, but no way I had to make my why back to Kyrenia at the end. ... I am not sure but this did not seem quite right... Any thoughts? thanks

Auxiant Without the white visa slip the immigration officer has no way of knowing when you entered into TRNC, and as you did not have your passport I think it was correct procedure

I thought they record on computer all ins and out, the paper slip is really just a receipt. In fact you can go to the police and ask for a Ins/Outs documents with history. What happens otherwise if you loose the little slip?

Your "in" was done against your Passport number. So the number on your ID card will not be in their system. You don't technically exist under their computer system. Therefore you cannot leave using that card as they only have you arriving with your Passport number. This is also a way to stop overstayers from exiting without paying fines. Another reason for using your Passport number when you come in is so that they don't chase someone with the same name as you if their sytem flags them up as an overstayer. You could, if there was a person with the smae name and an overstayer, take a while to explain that you are not the overstayer that they are looking for. They do not scan your photo so they don't known. They only that your name name matches and that's good enough for them to arrest you. So it makes sense that if you wish to leave a country, you exit using the same documentation that you used to enter it with. Going to South Cyprus is leaving the country of the TRNC.

Turkey has the same rule: You must enter and leave the country with the same document.WE almost missed our holiday in Russia last year just for that reason. How? you may say. We booked our holiday for Russia and we were going to fly from Istanbul to Moscow on Monday morning. We left Ercan on Sunday with our TRNC ID cards and entered Istanbul likewise. We did tell the passport office that we would be flying to Moscow next day to Moscow with our British passports and he said no problem. Next day they woul not let us get out with our TRNC ID cards because they were meant to be used only between Turkey and TRNC. We were not allowed to use our British passports because swe did not pay the visa and enter Tuyrkey with these passports. So we almost missed our holiday. We made contact with the assistant Governor of Istanbul through a friend and managed to leave Istanbul for Moscow and now we know better. It was a very new rule and many holidaymakers from TRNC were caught out and missed their holidays last summer. ismet

The way some TC's treat the Turks in TRNC - is it any wonder the Turks 'reciprocate'?

As you entered the TRNC on your passport, you have to produce that passport when you wish to leave. Simples! Geoff
