I am a British citizen with TRNC Residency permit as does my Kazakh wife. Today we tried to cross the border at Lokmaci and she was refused entry by the Greek border control. The Turkish Cypriot side was fine but the Greeks said she had entered through an illegal airport [Ercan] All this is totally contrary to what I had been told. The Greek border police officer who we showed our marriage license to was about to let us over until he consulted his boss who also asked how long we had lived together and did we have a home in the UK! I was stunned by all this and in the final analysis they are the ones who lose out as we won't bother again and the money we would have spent will be spent here in TRNC or Turkey. It was clear to me that it was a spur of the moment decision to be bloody-minded.

David, I had exactly the same situation with my Russian wife 2 weeks ago at 1 of the nicosia crossings.

The RoC customs policeman was however very helpful although he couldn't let us through.

As he explained to me the only way our wives can be entered as accomponying (married to) a European Citizen is by flying into an RoC airport when it will be entered into the central computer system after which the crossing is possible.

I even went as far as to explain that we were originally told my wife had to get an RoC visa to enter the country which meant sending away her passport for 2 weeks and he informed me that if she had flown with me she gets an automatic 2 week visa on arrival, wish I had the truth the last twicw we came through Turkey and it would have allowed her to cross over but alas it will have to wait till the next time we fly out and in again.

I know it doesn't help for the past but maybe for the future unless of course they change the rules again.

Thanks Paul. I see apart from the shared experience at the border we are also involved in the same industry.

I checked this out at the border prior to some non EU friends coming over. They were going to fly into Ercan because they would have been in Turkey before coming to Cyprus. They wanted to share their time between the N. and the S.

I was told they can take a chance, and that there's a possibility they will be allowed through if they use Metahan, but strictly they would have been deemed to have entered Cyprus through an illegal entry port and they will not have the stamp required on their visa (which they can get at Larnaca Airport, Pafos or Limassol Port). I asked at Agios Nik - they said they definitely would not let them thro there. Because of this, they changed their plans and flew into Larnaca. No problem going backwards and forwards then.

I go back and forth a lot. I've never had any bother until this year. This year (coming from N to S) I've had my car searched every time. Asked to get out of the car, passengers made to get out of the car, questioned at length. No idea why

Hi David,

Yes indeed but I thought you had retired. Are they still dragging you back in. You know what they say about crude, it never really washes off.

I'll send you a personal mail when I get a chance.
