Brenda,

If we can be of any assistance let me know. We have a company we work with who specialise in pet travel.

It can be very simple - some you can do yourself and the remainder including travelling kennels are best in the hands of the experts.

Hi Brenda, we transported our Jack russell to North Cyprus, we paid over a grand and since then found it is a lot cheaper if you take them on same plane as you as excess baggage. She couldn't travel with us as was told the aircraft we used wasn't heated in the hold. So do shop around, our price included a week in kennels and they made the transporter which was nothing special (just tea chest material and some wire)Phone airlines direct as this can be much cheaper than say Airpets.

Hi Brenda

I brought my dog over from UK a few years ago and like Mindy suggests, I did it all myself and saved a fortune. It is easier if they are small dogs, as the travel crates they need wont be too much of an issue when it comes to the size of door of the hold. First thing you need to do is contact your vet and DEFRA who will be able to tell you what you need to do UK end and contact the Vet Dept here in Cyprus who will give you the low down of what is required this end. If you decide to book it all yourself then you just contact the airline who you will be travelling with and check they will accept them, then you book them in as excess baggage, they need the combined weight of the dog and crate, they issue you with an excess baggage ticket and you just take them to the airport on the day of flight, check in as usual and then someone will come and take the dogs from you at the last minute to load in to the flight.

Good luck to you and your dogs

It's not so much the heating in the hold as the pressurisation - in 2006, when we moved, CTA had a limited number of aircraft whose holds were pressurised, and we had to ring them daily to check with them (and NAG them!!) about which aircraft were on which flights.

It's all a bit 'hands on', but it pays off in the end.

And it's good training for when you actually get to live here!!...

Brought my staffi had the wrong advice from defra as the didnt realise the situation in cyprus. He couldnt travel with me so had to put him in kennels who sorted everything out. He arrived 10 days later did 10 days quarantine and is still happily here with me

I brought Harry and Morgan, my two pekingese over from UK in 2003. Two dogs can't travel together in one big crate, they have to travel in seperate crates (I bought mine from Pets-R-Us) First thing you need to do is contact your vet and DEFRA who will be able to tell you what you need to do UK end (DEFRA and my own vet were extremely helpful with the whole procedure) and contact the Vet Dept here in Cyprus who will tell you what is required this end.

Buy a varikennel, hard plastic. Two small dogs can travel together in one kennel You must get the size right.all instructions for measurements are on their website Use Turkish Airlines they are fantastic!! Help you through every step of the way. Brilliant service

Don't touch CTA.Badly let down by them, lost our flights and money because they changed planes at the last minute.Apparently this is not an unusual occurance if they've not sold enough tickets to fill the larger plane.

Make absolutely certain that all your documentation is in order

Arrived at Ercan 29/11/09.Shaz our beloved pet came out on the carousel with the luggage Deep Joy!!

Two nights in quarantine, now we have her home.Quarantine kennels not quite like the kennels we pay a fortune to house our pets back in the Uk when we take a holliday, but it's clean, just very basic.

Dr Mehmet, head vetinary is a pleasant and reasonable man.If you want any more info email me .lynrobshaz@yahoo.co.uk . Good luck

If you are in Cyprus go to the vet dept in Lefkosha (we found trying t fax them a nightmare ) take copies of your export licence (which only lasts 10 days but Defra are good) vaccination record, rabies blood test result which is very important. Dr Mehmet Effendi will give you an import licence, he is extremely helpful and pleasant. We took our spaniels in by car last month the worst part being the Tasicu ferry. They did home quarantine. Day of week getting here is important ie if they can be taken to Lefkosha during working hours you will get them home later that day. They charge 200ytl and keep the passports for the quarantine period. It really was so much easier than I had dreaded
