I have a few friends visiting this year with young children and need advice on how to ensure they try and conserve as much water as possible. I dont want to sound too much of a nag to them as they are on holiday but would really appreciate any advice. Also read somewhere that if you put bricks in your toilet cisterns not much water is being used? Is this true? Again any advice on how to conserve water, besides the obvious, i.e. dont water plants with tap water would be gratefully appreciated.

when i visit my parents with my kids i have taught them at home that they dont have to flush the toilet every time apart from the obvious so as not to waste water.and yes something like a brick or water filled bottle in the cistern works.

i also bath the kids in shallow water with no bubble bath then re-use the water on the garden after.

every little helps

If having a shower, run water into a bucket until it goes hot then use this water for watering plants.

Have a bath in beer, use beer as a mouthwash when brushing your teeth and drink beer instead of tea or coffee

another way of saving water in the garden, would be to obtain, lengths of

rain water pipe or similer. when planting, trees or shurubs, dig a hole to

accept the roots, then cut down the rain water pipe, to leave about three or four inches above the surface, place the pipe next to the roots, and fill in hole.when you then water your plants, pour the water down the tube or pipe

this puts the water down to the roots, were it is needed and stops, evaporation

and may also require less watering. there by saveing water.

A simple solution is not to shower or bath. More than once a week is very over the top and once a fortnight is more than sufficient. For those that sweat a lot, use deodorants or, better still, anti perspirants and not the cheap ones!

Don't forget if you really must bath or shower and you have a swimming pool, then use that instead!

Hi everyone. Many thanks for all the posts. Will get the cisterns sorted tomorrow and the rainwater pipe for the plants is a brill idea. If anyone has any other good advice keep them coming. I have certainly learnt a lot from this posting and intend to implement all of the above. Thanks again.

To not have a shower when its 30 degrees ! Get in shower run it over your head and body. Turn the shower off and shampoo hair and fully soap/scrub body, turn shower back on and rinse. Please don,t cover up body smells with deodorants. Phew

Get a backwash tank and let the dirty water settle out in it before putting it back in your pool.

Put a small bottle of water in bathroom for brushing teeth. They will use a lot less than if using running tap water. I'd also put some plastic cups/glasses in bathroom where young children are concerned.

hi doughnuts40, try cooking vegetables, in a smaller sauce-pan,or buy a

vegetable steamer, you can then cook several veggies,at the same time.when water cools, apply to garden plants.

have a nice day.
