I have a pet cockatiel, part of the family. I would like to bring him out here next year.

From what I can gather, he would have to go in the hold of a plane flying into Ercan. I don't know any that allow birds into the hold.

Suggestions??

When we brought our dog and cat over we used Animal Airlines - it was a guy called Mike and they were really helpful (and half the price of Airpets!). I can't find the number but if you google them it should come up - he should be able to give you some advice!

Hi Mike - I would check with TRNC veterinary service to make sure that you can import your cockatiel before getting too excited.

If they say yes - we would be very happy to try to help you.

When my dog was in quarantine here (I use the term very loosely!!) there was a parrot "next door" so I think you can bring birds. Remember the cages are very cold and damp in the winter so choose when you bring the bird carefully. My dog was soaking wet EVERY day where the february wind blew all the rain into his cage.

I travelled from Istanbul to Ercan with my pet Cockatiel Coco 5 years ago. He had to go in a small cage (3 sides closed, one side bars). Apparently the smaller the better - limits their movement if they panic. He spent the entire flight on my lap and there was no problem at all with the airline. We did call ahead to say he'd be with us, but that's it. Dealing with quarantine was fun, we paid for his stay and the vet's travel costs to the airport and had to supply food for his stay in quarantine, we then handed him over to the vet at Ercan who beckoned us to follow him. At the other side of the airport carpark Coco was handed back to us with a "have a nice day". Not a bad experience all round.. He ended up doing that trip Istanbul-Ercan-Istanbul a couple of times and there was never a problem. Best of all, it cost nothing and Coco didn't have to suffer being in the hold!
