Whilst walking round TEMPO today noticed one of the girls splitting up Cadbury's chocolate biscuits which had been BOGOF and repricing them singularly surely this must be against some law even in the TRNC.

Usualy BOGOF's out here are done by the supermarket and not the product manufacturer so they will run a BOGOF campaign for a week or two and if they do not sell the quantities then they revert to the previous situation.

Iceland products are produced for the UK market at a very competitive price and that price is based on the amount they expect to sell in the UK. When these items are exported to Turkey and then on to the TRNC, due to import duties the UK price will bear no relation to the price that you will pay in the TRNC. The unfortunate fact of life is that Brit expats will buy Iceland products (why I do not know!) regardless of the price here in the TRNC. But that is their karma and all the time they are willing to pay for imported British foods then I don't think they can complain about the price of food out here in the TRNC.

'Iceland product marked 99p, TL 7!' So how much would expect to pay for that product considering it has gone through 2 lots of import duties?

The exporters/buyers do not pay retail price; they ship in container quantities; no duty in Turkey when destined for TRNC. UAE prices for UK imported food products are about 20% dearer.

OK so I will ask again,

'Iceland product marked 99p, TL 7!' So how much would expect to pay for that product bearing in mind that this food goes through distributors before hitting the the TRNC shops and also who pays for shipping from Turkey?

For those of you still not permanent here have you ever bought any Turkish product in the UK, because you wanted to remember the last time you were here? Sainsburys used to have a good range of Turkish oil and olives and other foodstuffs imported and I can well remember buying them at an extortionate price just because I missed them.

Same goes at this end of the world when you miss the odd thing - if you want it then you pay for it, never mind the price or how much it cost to get it here.

Bottom line is if you think it is too much then just don't buy it but remember that it has been available to you anyway.

I can remember the times when things just were not available anywhere and you would have paid the earth for a decent bit of strong cheese!!! BOGOFF's, Two for Ones, Half Price on second item etc, etc, all market sales to get you to buy them - nobody twists your arm!

I sold Efes bottle beer in the West End for £2.50 when London Turkish restaurants were charging £4.50. My GP was 60%. I think it's a mentality thing!

One Turkish fig in UK 39p take them off the tree for free in Turkey. I take Knorr stock cubes from NC and Turkey to the UK because they are cheaper.

I love waddo's sentiment.

If you do not like the price do not buy. If you buy do not complain later.

The choice is yours, nobody forces anyone to buy anything.

Anyone who believes an Iceland pizza marked with 99p will cost that then I am afraid you deserve to be ripped off.

The biscuits we saw were pre packed at the place of origin with the price on! we did not expect them to be cheap just feel they should be sold the way they were packed after all the shop would have paid the way they were packaged. Two packets wrapped together for the price of one !!

Sounds like a typical example of TRNC RIPOFF to me! doesn't matter how many excuses you add to it!

Would just have loved to buy my car at the price it was sold in the Japanese auction as well - price as marked was a little bit higher by the time it was sold in TRNC. That is life and it was the car I wanted so I paid the price! That is the whole point of the thing anyway.

If you think it is a TRNC ripoff then don't buy it, simple. Just don't tell me how many times you see things that cost more here than in London but if you do, don't forget to add the cost of the airfare to get me to London so I can buy it all that much cheaper.

I paid 6.95tl in Bektas for gravy granules flash marked with UK price 95p. I don't think that I was "ripped off". Bektas didn't try to hide the 95p. I didn't have to buy them. If I make them last four times longer than I do in UK then I got a bargain.

I don't see anyone complaining about the £3 bottles of spirits. OK, so they may not be Stolichnaya, Gordons or Haigh, but they have the same effect. Jeeezuz, do they have the same effect.

It's no different to the Tempo restaurant in karaoglanoglu. Poor service and rip off prices especially as the food comes from Tempo next door

We were thinking of going to this attractive looking restaurant - however, if that's your assessment, we'll give it a miss - thanks for the tip!

Toony, I am with you. If you don't want to pay then don't - walk away a shop elsewhere, simple. Go over the mountains to the new supermarket on the Gazi/Lefcosia road, mainly Turkish people shopping there and no complaints from them.

Just as a question, when you were/are in the UK did you find yourself paying more for things at the seaside than in the towns? Used to live at the seaside and it was always more expensive than in the towns. Bristol cheaper than Weston on the Mud for instance. Don't forget that Girne is the major seaside resort, so expect the prices to be higher anyway.

Not missing the point - TinLondon said it was another TRNC Ripoff - I won't be knowingly taken for a mug, I simply walk away and take my cash elsewhere. In the markets it is easier, just hang around and listen to the quotes for things for the locals then ask what price for the same item, if there is a difference, point it out and either walk or buy at the same price. Its good ere!!!!

i think you should go and make up your own mind. out of all the people i know that have been to Tempo restaurant everyone says how they enjoyed it. you can read the write up in a recent previous Saturdays edition of Cyprus Today. if someone has a complaint then you have to address the manager not keep putting remarks on the forum. any complaint (if any at all) are dealt with satisfactory.

Heinz Beans pack of four on the shelves and then you notice the single tins lower down....on the side of the tin states "NOT TO BE SOLD SEPERATE" so they are from a pack of four (dearer). If the supermarket are getting these as a promotion then they should not take the Pi@@. If not then they can sell them how they like. If the price is in TL then they can not charge further. If it is in stirling.....forget about it.

To many ex-pats take their UK taste buds with them to Cyprus and should be trying other brands that are basically the same and cheaper.

It just means the deal is over common sense really. It could be labelled 99p but you don't live in UK and supermarkets have to pay out alot of custom goods fees to bring it over here for you greedy british people that doesn't enjoy a pack of baklava but want the Rich Tea biscuits......oh very posh

Hi Waddo, msg 25, Spend about 5 months in UK each year. Live on holiday camp on E Yorks coast. Do find prices at Driffield and Beverley, both about 15 miles inland, cheaper than Bridlington, on the coast. The difference isn't worth making the journey purely for financial reasons, but they are both lovely places to visit.

Leeds is much better for shopping but only go if visiting friends or family.

We go to Lefkosia quite a lot here, usually by dolmus, can't say I find it any cheaper than Girne.

Tony

ps only up cos I was going to the fight. Got a flat tyre so missed it. Congrats to Haye, don't think he'll beat either of the Klitchkos though.
