When I move out of my apt on the 25th December I will be living next door for a month

But I will have to disconnect my Extend service, so any suggestions which would be OK to use just for a month or 5 weeks without incurring too much expense

Any help would be appreciated as I cant be without my skype for contact with my family

Many thanks

sheila

RE msg 1, smithy: try to borrow from a friend or board member a Türkcell or Telsim modem (for a mobile connection) and buy a one month subscription. Following the rules of Türkcell I think it's not allowed, but on the other hand Türkcell changes the rules also at random.

If you do Hans that would be great, as long as they can show this idiot how to use it.

Have you got WiFi on your computer?

If so. There are a number of places where you can use it for a cup of coffee. (Now is that cheap for an hour or two of internet?)

Try Ezik Premier and Cafe Durkan there are others that were listed on a thread in the last two weeks.

Smithy Turksell will do the job there are usually some second-hand ones advertised half price on the forsale board .If they want to sell it they need to demonstrate it they are easy to use

If next-door where you used to live is a wireless connection can you still get a signal from your new new place ? If so ask the new people for the connection to stay for a month for 20ytl for the power and inconvenience to them

Hi smithy,

Why not get cable rerouted from the roof to the flat next door?

won't be that expensive

Good luck,

Navek

Hi Rob

I dont have wireless connection just from extend and next door as its only their Holiday home they havent got things like that. A friend of mine who went back to the UK had something from extend and it cost around 30ytl and she had to go into turkcell and get it put on or something like that, but cant get hold of her at present to ask what or how. They gave her a number I think then she could use skype etc, anyone know what this is called.

If your PC is wi fi enabled then maybe it would be worth having a chat with the new owners and asking them if it possible for them to put the router in a position where you can receive a signal next door - after all you have paid for the service and they would get to benefit from it. Neighbours of mine live 30 metres apart but are able to share the same router.

My lap top is not wi fi so dont think that would be an option

Navek dont think my neighbours would be happy for me doing that, its been hard enough getting someone to let me stay there for a few weeks, dont want to take liberties.

Many thanks all

extend do a hotspot2 reciever for 150tl and you get a month free with it d/l is 1mbps apparently not bought it yet... and u should be able to run the cable down the same pipe as ur tv comes into ur flat so no drilling is reqired plus the other end into your router and hey presto you will have internet connection

Smithy

Turksell dongle seems your only choice with no laptop wifi it allows the use of skype you should get a dongle S/h for 70-90ytl new circ 150ytl it self loads onto the laptop the vendor should give you the pin or the turksell office have them to match the number 60ytl is enough for a month with just reading the paper and e-mails and its always back up for extend when you have it installed

Also wifi is vulnerable to hacking/hijacking if you do not have a vpn on your machine recent BBC programme exposed the risks

Smithy unless the dongle will accept Telesim or turksel sims the credit will evaporate very quickly as the roaming charge for 3g is extortionate just like using a UK mobile on the island especially in the North as non EU rates which are bad enough

Smithy, I am not sure if your sons dongle will work here but I can confirm that when I return to the UK my dongle bought here does NOT work there!!!!

Hopefully as there are many people you talk to on here, one of them may be able to lend you a dongle for that period if they are not using it and then you just need to pay 60 tl for a months supply 3G from Lemars.

Are you leaving us?

Hi Mrs. Snakes it will be hard to find someone who does not use there dongle, but I live in hope as that will solve all my problems, the thought of living in an empty apt with bits and bobs and no use of my laptop for 4/5 weeks will kill me,

If you can get anyone to bring their laptop to you, that has WiFi on it, see if there are any hotspots nearby eg Extend,Nethouse and if so try chinese bazaar shop in Lefkosia for a WiFi USB plug in, wont be that expensive, as I bought a bluetooth usb there and only cost 12tl, and then use the hotspot number for 29tl pm from whoever.

Sheila, if there`s a land line in the apartment, why not do dial up with Superonline for a month.

You can get the scratch cards from Lemar. You just then need to telephone them and they will put you on line. It`s worth a try. xx

Dear Smithy, why all the fuss above (see msg 4&5)? Call me Monday (05338645433, but not very early...) and meet me with your laptop Tuesday 1 pm (just before we start playing chess). You know where. Problem solved.
