Please - Does anyone know when/what time the BBC are showing the TRNC War Memorial Service taking place in Girne today?

Just checked all BBC remembrance day press releases and schedules and no mention of the Kyrenia Memorial, I did like the mention during the parade at the cenotaph for the British servicemen who fought in the Cyprus emergency against EOKA,

There is mention of the Kyrenia memorial in this report from the BBC, but no mention of it being televised.

Thank you for your responses. The reason I thought it was being televised was that I read something about it in one of local papers about three weels ago but maybe the BBC changed their plans.

It's on the main Girne - Lapta road, not too far away from the big roundabout. Next to Kombos the Mercedes dealer and across the road from Mr Pound. Hope that helps.

Well said Spangles. A very moving service today and a big thank you to all who managed this event. The Memorial is a fine and fitting tribute to the fallen. Gone, but not forgotten.

There was a definite 'fact' that the BBC were coming to film. I wasn't there, but didn't anyone see a camera labelled BBC. They may well show it in some feature or other later. I know that BRT were filming and this may be put together with other footage and be shown on CNN (maybe!). But what about ADA and Genc - anyone seen anything about that?

Brian Thomas has now said on some other page that the BBC link didn't happen. So that clarifies that , but other local programmes were there, and I believe ADA is showing something every night for this week.

I was informed today thet the senior Turkish General came to the memorial on Sunday, and was TURNED AWAY.

shame on you organisers, was it through fear of upsetiing the Greeks?

Lets face it they had diddly squat to do with the deaths of these service men and Women!!!!!! or was I mistaken?

The only way to get a proper answer as to why the Turkish Military man was turned away, is to ask the organising committee. I think there is a possibility that it was decided by the Cyprus Memorial Trust that the affair was all entirely British - possibly to keep the Greeks happy. I havealso heard that Peter Millett felt a little uncomfortable. Maybe it was a question of politics - but you must gfo to the top and ask ! This was one facet of the event which upset a few folk, but it is always difficult to please everyone.

How humiliating for this Man who actually turned up at the spot to be refused/ turned away. I am appalled at the organisers.

Who do they think they are!! behaving in such an Abysmal way.

And yes it did happen

Right lets just kill yet another rumour. A Turkish general did indeed turn up at the cemetery at about 1030am on Sunday morning, he was in battle fatigue dress (not ceremonmial uniform) and was there to check up on the military security measures that were in place, that is all, he was not 'turned away' by anyone. No Turkish Cypriot dignitaries were invited to the service because we held a VIP Dinner the evening before at the Mercure hotel where all the A list TRNC VIP's were invited so that the Trust could personally thank the TRNC government for their massive support in this project. Everyone of them was aware that this was a purely British memorial service and were very happy with that. There were many Turkish Cypriot people who attended as private citizens, in addition

There was a police officer in full dress uniform who attended and was invited to lay a wreath at the private wreath laying ceremony at the conclusion of the memorial service to honour the lives of the policemen -

Contd: which he did.

As usual there will always be people looking for things to go wrong and offering adverse comments.

I would like to publicly thank my committee for all their hard work over these last 6 months, only they know the full extent of the political shinanigins that we have had to endure throughout this period both locally and further afield.

As for the BBC, they will have there own reasons for not broadcasting the ceremony and I am not privy to those.

I would also like to thank everyone locally who attended on the day, what a magnificent turnout! Anyone who was there will know how poignant and moving the ceremony was and from the many, many comments that we have received from both the relatives and the veterans I am confident that we produced what was intended on the day - A Remembrance Service!

Thank you for the clarification Brian.

Think certain people may want to offer an apology now that this "rumour" has been addressed?

Thank you Brian, for that informative post, very enlightening. I apologise if I have made a mistake, unfortunately it was told to me by someone standing close by, who speaks turkish, and relayed the information. As they said it happened..........

Thank you puppylover, I am not afraid to apologise, I can make my own decisions how and when to do it.

I will also do it in person when I next see Brian.

Glad that's sorted. Thanks to Brian! One must always beware here of 'Chinese Whispers' which are sometimes soloud you can't hear the truth.

Oh yes, as tol the question 'Are you a politicians' - well, I kinda was, but not. Full explanations given on request, but really not important enough to bother about.

But I do believe in truth, justice, equality and fairness. Perhaps that;s why I sound like a politician - or maybe that's why I do NOT sound like a politician.!!!!
