I have spent 3 weeks searching the shops and cannot find cottage cheese anywhere. I looked up the Turkish for cheese and then searched again - still cannot find it. All I can find is 'solid' types of cheese (some in water) - does Cottage Cheese as we know it exist here?

I got some a month or so ago from South. It was Philladelphia Cottage Cheese. Not seen it in the North though I am afraid!

It has been in Hur Deniz (the fish and meat shop near big electric shop on the nicosia roundabout) along with curd and mascapone cheese. They get it from the south so be prepared to pay a high price.

Ileli in Alsancak had the small tubs of Philadelphia last week - go to right to the back of the store, it is near the top right hand side of chiller cabinet on back wall. I think the price was ok too. They also sell sour cream.

Just to confirm it was definitely the cottage cheese they were selling - Krem peynir isn't cottage cheese, it's cream cheese.

Or try this http://www.allotment.org.uk/allotment_foods/cheese-making/making-cottage-curd-cheese.php but you may have difficulty finding fresh semi-skimmed milk! - it says don't use the UHT variety.

Hur Deniz in Girne had loads of cottage cheese this morning - it came from Greek side. Illeli also stocks it, along with mascarpone cheese.

Turkish equivalent of "cottage cheese " is "nor". you can find it in almost all supermarkets ( at the counter with salads , cheese) or at the Wednesday market , they sell it at the back of the market together with hellim.
