Children in the UK don't have very good knowledge of wild animals, according to a survey.

The people behind the study asked 1,000 children about animals. Half couldn't recognise a crocodile, while one in 10 didn't know what a gorilla was.

The research also found that almost one in every four kids asked had never been to a zoo or wildlife park.

And around one in 10 children couldn't tell the difference between a male and female lion.

What’s going on with children in the UK?

I find that very difficult to believe. My seven year old son can name pretty much every animal at at zoo, as can all his friends. The school even did a day out at the safari park, so that they could see the animal up close and not just pictures in a book.

What type of children are they talking to in this survey - 1 year olds?

Sadly, I dont think this is specific to the UK, my 9 year old cousin in NC has similar difficulties, but living amongst so many Donkeys, Goats and Sheep he had no difficulties with identifying those but when it came to bears, foxes and hedgehogs he was lost as a headless chicken.

Come on lets be real here, with the BBC producing the worlds best nature programmes and the abundance of wildlife in the UK and on TV, a host of many childrens characters such as old favourites like Winnie the Pooh and Paddington not to mention all the Disney characters, I think there is something seriously wrong with the results and conduct of this survey.... sounds like just another pointless survey to me.
