Had a busy day yesterday having the kitchen refitted so didn't feel like cooking last night, hubby suggested fish and chips so off he went to Rivada.

We had fish and chips twice, I was amazed when he told me that it had cost 30TL, around £12 at todays exchange rate, £6 per portion , won't be going there again that's for sure.

msg 4, where you been eating Sheila, Yorkshire coast top prices are only £4 for Haddock and Chips.

That's takeaway price, I assume that's what hat got. Only been to Rivada once, earlier this year when daughter and kids were visiting. She wanted fish and chips for tea, Rivada had just had a plug in Cyprus Today so off we went. I'm glad she paid for them, and not me. The only impressive thing about them was the wait for them doing. Not bad for here though.

Yes it was takeaway, and in the UK we never had to pay that much, £ 3.50 at our local chippy, in my opinion £6 for a fish supper is a rip off and we won't be going there again.

£2.75 for large portion of F&C in Scarborough, N.Yorks, so my family tell me. But I don't care, no intention of visiting UK ever again as long as the KKTC exists, whatever the price here. Incidentally at the British St. Nicholas base on thr GC side, just over the breen line from Famagusta area, the F & C shop there charges 1.50 Euros for LARGE portion of chips, $.60 Euros for a LARGE Cod or Haddock in english-type batter. We often pop over there to partake now the crossing point opened in 2004.

You must have some good mates, Newlad, when I was drinking, legally, in '62, 'n you were still at school a pint of Tetleys in Leeds was about 1s 6p. About the same price for fish 'n chips or (not and) 10 woodbines. Gotta stop cos I'm coughing just thinking of the bloody things. Ergo 8 pints + fish 'n chips + 10 woodbines comes to 15 bob. (bloody calculator don't do shillings so may be wrong) You must owe your mates an efes or two, no wonder you wear the tints.

Tony

ps come to Leeds 'n get your pic took wi' a real soccer hero, not that Bobby wasn't.

Local chippy in Scotland £5.00 for battered fish supper and £5.70 for special fish supper (breadcrumbed).

Wetherspoons for large Efes £1.89. Special fish is the size of a small whale.

Paul Message 10. I remember the old days. You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt. )

Oh! Bill that really made me laugh and brought back so many childhood memories. Scraping ice off the inside of the bedroom windows. One tiny fire to heat the whole house, the outside lavvy with newspaper on a nail.

Cold lino which you tried to jump over in order to get in to bed. We don't know we are born these days but you know what, we never said we were bored as kids. We always could find something to do, playing tops and whips, bowling a tyre around the streets, playing checks with four stones or hop scotch with a tin. No computers in them days or ipods, gameboys etc. Have we all moved on to much, there is the start of another discussion?

Could it be you were eating a fish that has not come from the Med? Where do they get the fish from and how much does it cost to transport it? Perhaps that is a factor in the cost.

Msg 16

I remember them days outside lavvy across the road ,candle in a hole in the wall and newspaper on a string.Six of us in a bed used to hate it when it was nightshift or first shift as we didnt have the family coats on the bed (Grandas Dads Uncles) it was bloody freezing.Good thing about the snow was on the way to school you could break of the cream from the milk bottles on the doorsteps.Wore sandals to shool in the winter and wellies in the summer .They were cheaper to buy out of season.Times not to be forgotten eh.

fish n chips may be 9tl in cod baba between a certain time but its not cod it's hake which is a lot cheaper to buy.if you want cod it will be at about 18tl i think not quite sure. in the other direction in Çatalköy Flippers is good value, the last time i was there it was 11tl for cod and chips which they call standard size but was ample and the chips were fresh potatoes not like cod babas frozen ones.

Denise (Msg 23),

I'm glad you mentioned the chips in Cod Baba, I was there in the summer and the chips just didn't have that same taste as back at home, they lacked flavour which made me think they were frozen too. I didn't know about the cod substitute... Thanks for point it out. This topic really has got my taste buds going.... My mouth is watering just thinking about my vinegar soaked chips
