I have my kimlick card, and have had for approx 15 years, when I moved to cyprus in 2004 with my english husband and child.....

he also got his kimlick card...he would have had to do his turkish national service, but because he had been in the british army...it was classed as a conflict of interests, so didnt have to do it......

i believe there is an age limit also

Anyone who becomes a TRNC citizen i.e. gets a kimlik card has to do National service unless he did so in another country or if he was exempted from doing so. There is no age limit but there is a health check and an old man is likely to fail that one. My uncle who is over 80 celebrated such an event about a couple of years ago but he did have to go through the tests just the same. Although the army doctor said he had poor eyesight he insisted that he had good eyesight but eventually we persuaded him not to object

Ismet,

I am a UK national and have a white kimlik card. Can you tell me what the restrictions (if any) there are on me working? - can I set up my own business?

Warbabies,

Would you care to explain what a white kimlik is? I have no idea what it is.

I would love to become a citizen and have my poor husband be the oldest military potato peeler in the business. He doesn't speak Turkish, so could not obey the square bashing commands, and as he is 80 it would make a great story. BUT he was in RAF, so would be exempt.

But ladies don't squirm in your furry boots - they don't call up ladies - just the fellas.

I do know of one man, married to a London Cypriot who wanted to become a citizen, but changed his mind when, although told he could have his kimlik card and be a citizen, would have to do national service. He has settled for permanent residency.

Marie is quite right, there is no place for the ladies in the army.

Could it be that Permanent Residency card is white, and Citizenship, green?

With the Permanent Residency, would one be allowed to run a business etc.?

I had to look at my ID card again just to make sure I got it right. Mine is white with a red Border line. TRNC flag in the top right corner and TRNC official sign in the left top corner and a very handsome picture of somebody in the right bottom corner. What else? Ah yes, the big signature at the bottom left belongs to my old colleague. We both worked for the same company for some time before it went under
