We've had a shock recently. I understand that the Nilesat is the same as Showtime Arabia, which has recently been taken over/or joined Orbit. Fees for the full package for last 2 years was £360 per year. Renewal fees for same package has gone up to £800! Full package includes approx 10 Film Channels, 2 series channels, 3 comedy channels, Sky News (and 5 others), Approx 6 documentary channels (Discovery etc), BBC prime, BBC Lifestyle, 4 sport channels (including every premier game live). Quality was excellent & back up service very good. Don't know what like now as I haven't renewed.

Hi Linus

Nilesat is a satellite that broadcasts both scrambled and Free to Air (FTA) channels. All you need to access it is a 1metre dish and a satellite box (I would suggest a Next YE2000). Tektan in Girne can supply and fit all the gear required for about £150 and there is nothing further to pay. You will be able to receive about a dozen channels with predominately english speaking content. These include CNN News, BBC World News, Fox Movies, Fox series, MBC Persia, MBC Action, MBC Max, MBC 2 & 4, Dubai 1, Channel 7 TV. From these channels you will get a pretty good mixture of tv series' (Desperate Housewives, CSI, CSI Miami, ER, Lost etc) up to date movies, news etc. We have had the system for about 8 months and are very happy with it. Picture quality is excellent although as with all satellite systems it does get affected by heavy rain.

Regards

Paul

Fiendish Paul. Great information. Could you let me know where in Girne I might find Tektan?

I am no satellite expert but I believe that you can get some Sky content via a 1.8 metre dish. If you want BBC, ITV and Sky channels you will need a 4 metre dish. There has been loads of info about satellite tv posted in the past, just go to the search box at the top of the page and type in satellite tv.

Not sure exactly, but as you walk down Girne high street from the big screen, I think Tektan is either 100 metres up the first or second street on the left. I am sure if you ask a local they will point it out. Tektan phone number is 0392 8152441.

If interested in getting sky etc, contact Mustafa Ozhakki (AKA iceman) on 0533 8610329 or info@skycyprus.com .

As for Showtime, they can keep it. The price increase is over 100%. So ours has now expired and continue to watch the FTA channels on Nilesat.

So what is the cost of the top package for sky ? do you need to subscribe for the year ? or can you just subscribe to a few months of the year ?
