Cannot recommend anyone however, due to lack of activity in the property market place, put a figure on what you're happy with and offer that and get what you wish to be done in writing with receipts! They are all a bunch of crooks, some less so than others. CLIENT BEWARE!

I think everyone is scared of recommending anyone. I would say Naomi Mehmet BUT first read her website and then make your own decision. On a personal note I have received excellent advice from her twice. I am sure now I have tried to help, someone will come on here and contradict what I have said. Mind you, if you said Mother Teresa was saintly some people on this board would slag you off. It seems helpful people get targeted for abuse.

I have heard of a guy called Cenk Boyar. Apparently he does not work for any of the developers and only works for purchasers. He is young but apparently very keen. I don't have any contact details for him but he has an office in the centre of Girne.

Your site is in Esentepe isn't it? the reason I ask is because there is also a good lawyer who covers Famagusta, but not other areas.

You could try Mine Konat. Have been with her since we came here some five years ago and while I am the first to admit, she was I believe well in with the builders and estate agents then, has since seen the suffering that buyers have gone through, and now fights like hell for them.

Message 17 - does a leopard ever change it's spots?

Many lawyers were working for both the developer and the buyer, although not illegal here, it certainly should be as it's a massive conflict of interest. You can normally tell by the wording on your contracts. And because of all the property problems and lack of protection for buyers and rececession, sales have come to a standstill, so many of these same lawyers will now be trying to get in on disputes and litigation against developers as it will be the new way to make money.

Wouldn't it be great if all these lawyers were lobying the government to change policies and laws to protect buyers and thus kickstarting the sad economy? Wouldn't it be great if these lawyers were putting pressure on the bar association to sort out the rogues? Wouldn't it be great if they worked with the HBPG to sort out the problems once and for all?

Thanks everyone for your input. While you were doing that i shopped around and ruled out;

Munir Akil because he still £1000 of my cash and hasn't done a thing in 4 years - Useless

Gurkan & Gurkan on;y becausethe represent Unwin Estaes and as you so rightly say that is a confleict of interests especially as i haven'r rulled out suing Mark Unwin for his part in this.

Mustafa Shener, a criminal lawyer and a great bloke but way too expensive for this sort of thing.

I'm now researching the names you gave me. Thank you.

It looks like I may in Tutrtle bay in the next couple of weeks so if anyone fancies showing me the best palces for a beer or three drop me a note and i'll get in touch on arrival

message 18 kibrissibel.

It would be a bit disingenius of the lawyers to try and litigate against developers .As a developer I would think it a damn cheek for the lawyers to take a high moral stand suddenly ,after all those years of not representing their clients, and putting all the blame on me.

Ivorbankloan.

Several people have good things to say about Naomi Mehmet, but personally going by your problem with Unwins and a couple of lawyers in Girne, I think you would be better trying for a recommended lawyer from Nicosia with very little or no connection with Girne.

Hi Ivor, I would go along with Early Birds comments about Naomi Memhet, she is very professional.

She does a regular question answering on our website, there is lots of information about legal problems on there.

Here is a link to the latest article.

meesage21.

Aygan & Issy Okray should not be trusted under ANY circumstances believe me. They will look after the developer rather than you.

moonrakers.

In most cases they have no choice, the developer is after all their client and although you are as well, the developer is a better earner.Until it becomes illegal for a lawyer to represent both parties ,never take the lawyer the estate agent recommends as they too have a greater duty towards the developer than towards you.Find your own.

Pick a lawyer from recommendations here and make sure they have no connection with developer.

If I were you, I would avoid all Girne lawyers - they make too much money from the developers to rock the boat when you have a problem.

If you live in Famagusta District, go to Dolun Ustener. She is excellent, she charges the same prices for expats and locals, and her husband is Elko2, a much respected member of the forum. They are a great team and speak very good English. AND they get very cross about developers who rip people off!

You couldn't do better.

Izzy at Okray law firm is great, been using them for the last 5 years. They are in Girne behind the Telephone Place , in the little aquare with all the other solicitors. Izzy speaks very good English, as do most of his staff.

Ivor,

I would agree that you are better served by someone outside of Girne.

It isa fact that duty of care is almost totally absent.

Most of the developers, agents and developers around Girne are well known to each other and general knowledge passes without obstacle.

Any litigation in TRNC is a tremendously expensive and difficult. The Courts do not help and it is the legal eagles who feed well on the unfortunate.

Take great care, do not pay until you are claer what work is to be done and what you should expect.

Be prepared for lengthy delay and frustration.

Good luck.
