If you are a citizen: You can own more than one donum of land without having to form a business. You can start a business without having to have 51% owned by a TC and without putting large sums of money in the bank for a certain period of time. You don't have to get PTP. You don't need residency or work permit.

Sorry, forgot to add that if you are a male citizen, you would have to do your national service, unless you have done military service in UK or other country of origin and unless you are medically exempt.

Thank you Sibelle, you summed it up nicely. As far as ladies are concerned its all plusses and no minuses. As for men, they have to do the National Service unless they ahve done so already elswhere.

Kibrissibel - this is most helpful and thankyou. Am I right in concluding then, that even with permanent residency one needs a work permit to work - even as self-employed? Thanks

Call me cynical but are you likely to be able to get either Permanent Residency or Citizenship if you are of working age?

Permanent residency - yes, under certain circumstances - it is supposed to be due to length of time here, but Citizen ship has become decidedly more difficult. Long story. Ask Eroglu!

Do you know of anyone (other than spouses of TCs) who has obtained Citizenship during this decade?

I know of several in the 80s & 90s but not since then?

Even Bill Dreghorn didn't get his citizenship until he was over 90! - and was most peed off that he couldn't join the army.

As I understand it, the last government gave less than 70 citizenships during their term of office. The previous government, now returned to office, gave over 6,000 (many to non-Turkish) and condsidering the positive vibes about ex-pats coming from the current government, citizenship may become easier to obtain.

Also, doesn't the requirement to do army service cease at age 60?

Joviasl John,

there is no age limit but they are subject to health check and can be exempted on those grounds.

Despite reading all these postings several times,-still can't see an answer to the question regarding Permanent Residency, and the possibility of then being able to run one's own company, or be self-employed. A definitive answer would be much appreciated.

A couple of comments.

1. Permanent residency and having one's own company. I believe, but please check, you can form a company with a TC as main stake holder and this has little to do with residency. It is a separate issue, but please check with those who know. Ask a good Accountant - they normall know.

2. Basheer: Are you getting confused between a Kimlik card or one of this ltitle 'residency' cards we all get issued when we get Temp. Residency- after three months of being here.

3. Army. The policeman is obviously right - you are not Cypriot blood, but if you become a citizen, then the rules as spoken of apply. You then have pseudo Cypriot blood and can fight for the good of all (or peel potatoes for the good of all.

One should always ask an expert! I am not one, but have learned a bit since being here. And beware, even the experts differ. I found that when I wanted a ten year driving licence. Civil Servants all gave different answers. Confusing isn't it?

Hi Marie B - I know nothing about the merits of permanent residency v citizenship - I just have temporary residency - but as far as the driving licence is concerned when my English driving licence needed renewing at the age of 70 last June I went to the driving school next to the Police Station in Girne - they asked if I wanted 1 year 3 year 5 year or 10 year and to minimise beaurocracy) I opted for 10 year - ready in a week - no hassle - 650TL - - bargain - everything goes up in price every year - checked by the police - fine. Hope this info helps.

Thanks Joanie1. I see you joined oln my birthday last year!

Thanks for info re licence. But yes, I got a 10 year in the end, but the lady in Girne said I couldn't, in spite of it having been changed back to 1,5 or 10. She said I needed an extra one year before getting more, but a nice man standing next tome in the office said 'Go to Lefkosia - my wife did and no problems.' So, I went to Lefkosia and got my Licence. They had some info wrong on it twice, but that didn't bother me. Finally collected it on the third go and discovered my name is Maram. But what the heck. What's in a name. And mine cost less than 650tl which proves your point of the economy of the 10 year one.

As to the difference between the various residencies - permanent means you don't go back every year, which saves a bit of 'hassle'. Some people just hate the 'hassle'. I think it is a fun day out - but it IS a day! Citizen of course means a sense of 'security' and the right to vote. Thanks again.

I understood from my advocate many years ago, that the advantage of having citizenship as a foreigner, was the right to appeal in the law court, if you ever had the misfortune to be in this position. The disadvantage being your male descendents , who qualify for National Service here if they stay over 90 days in any one year.

I have been a permanent resident since 1988, had a business here from 1983-2006. I got permanent business permission 1 week after arriving here full time to live and work. We spent at least two years setting up a business here before our final move. In those days we had to have a local as a business partner, on a 49%/51% agreement.

Jetski,

After completing my required years as a temporary resident, I now have permanent residency and had so for more than a year and cannot use it in any way as a citizenship kimlik card. In other words, I cannot buy more than 1 donum of land (apart from the latest change in law re: 5 donums but I don't know anything about this). My card cannot be used in place of a TC for any business ie shareholder, the only advantages I have is that I don't have to go through the rigmarole of renewing every year and I don't have to leave the country every 3 months.

I don't know whether this is of any help to you but you really should speak to an accountant for the correct information.

I believe you now get a 'white kimlik' when you get your Citizenship. They only thing that is different from the old Citizenship is that you can't vote.

ClaireCat44,

I am unsure what the colour of the kimlik card is when you get your 'citizenship' but mine is white and I am only a permanent resident

Maybe someone could tell me how I get Citizenship, cos I keep meeting brick walls. I also rather fancied 'im downstairs being the most ancient potato peeler in the world, and I could then sell the story, but unfortunately he did his National Service in U.K and so is exempt. But maybe they would exempt him on other grounds for citizenship. I have heard this Government is more flexible, but haven't yet met the 'right' person.

And like many thing shere, the goal posts get changed regularly, so keep checking any of you as to what youwant and how you get it. You can't get Permanent until you have been here 6 years (it used to be 2!).

Good luck to all of you on your quest for a more stable future here. See you on the way!

I got mine when 5 years was enough but as I said that was a year to 18 months ago and the goal posts have moved (again) on how long you have to wait before applying for one, so the answer to your question is 'I don't know now'

With ref to msg 30, we were actually told by the immigration office in Lefkosa that there was no point considering applying for citizenship as they were not granting any at all and had not done so for 2 years previous to us asking!

We are not able to apply yet as it is too soon so I guess we will hit that brick wall when we get there.
