Bill, you hope to recognise your great-grandfather? I'll upload more tonight or tomorrow. Got hundreds of drawings, pictures and maps (Captain, later Lord H.H. Kitchener). Watch this space.

I was only away for a couple of hours (The Filling Station in Lapta - also known as the ex-Stumble Inn - is a more pleasant place than I feared) and this thread has been taken over and is now supervised by the Ministry of Silly Talks. Back to business, boys and girls. My favourite 1878 drawing is now on line to view: (title: "A day ashore at Larnaca"): http://is.gd/4Uqs1 . Isn't this a fabulous impression?

Well, some things have changed indeed in only 130 years... Ever seen the British fleet in Larnaca, saluting on the Duke of Edinburgh's birthday? Here you go: http://is.gd/4UqT2 .

Forgot to mention: these pics are uploaded as cropped (25%) images (the scans on my hard disk are 4x larger than you see on your screen). If someone interested would like to have a copy of a 100% scan (to print or to keep) - just let me know and I'll email it to you: hansdoeleman@allcrusades.com .

Wonderful prints, do you have any of Lord Kitchener? He recommended my Father for a commission as an Officer in the 1914-18 war. Father was his messenger boy!

For those interested in the history of Cyprus I have a PDF copy of a book entitled:

Cyprus, as I Saw it in 1879, by Samuel W. Baker

E-mail me and I will reply with the PDF file attached.

RE msg 31, louthlass: click this link and you'll find a lot of images of this amazing cartographer of Cyprus. Can't judge his military skills but mapping Cyprus (1878-81) was certainly one of the best performances in the 19th century. In my business he's one of my heroes: http://is.gd/4UOba .

One of the most fascinating photos of Cyprus I ever saw was of a potters house. All the broken and mishaped pots were somehow attached to the front wall of his cottage and used to house pigeons!! There must have been hundreds!! The eggs and young birds were a well known staple in those days (turn of the century) - but imagine the mess and smell!!

There were camels here until 1974. I'm told they were eaten, although they must have been very tough to say the least.

RE msg 44, loslobos: (...) Hey Dutch, Did you ever watch the UK TV Series "Vandervalk" some 25 - 30 years ago ? (...)

=> No, I don't remember. I looked it up: "John Barry Foster (21 August 1927 – 11 February 2002) - known professionally as Barry Foster - was a British actor who appeared in numerous film roles and is best known for his leading role as a Dutch detective in the ITV drama series, Van der Valk, which spanned five series over 20 years from 1972." I never watched ITV in Holland, mainly because it wasn't included in my TV package - I'm a news fan and BBC2 and CNN were my favourites.
