Hi All. This is my first post on this site, and hope that it is the first of many. Me and mine live and work in Abu Dhabi, we have bought a bungalow in Chatalkoy for retirement. If I could find work in NC then I would move permanently and hubby would commute, but until that happens if ever it does, we will just be visitors for the next 4 years, hopefully visiting every couple of months or so. I am originally from Darlington and hubby from Bristol, we have been in the UAE for 8 years, we dont have any ties to the UK, so NC is our new home. We are shipping a container and have been told that we need a Murtah's letter, can anyone tell me please where we go to get this letter. Thanks.

Hi Lorraine,

Welcome to Cyprus 44. Not sure where in Catalkoy you get this as we live in Lapta but I am sure someone will let you know.

I've seen it misspelt many times on this board so maybe this will help: the elected head of a village or of a neighbourhood within a town (you read "mah." or mahalle" on a map; example: Edremit (mah.)) is called "Muhtar". Pronounced in English: muk-tar.*

* Pedantic, I know (but this is the way it is)... I wish you a happy stay in TRNC!

Welcome Lorraine, the Muhtar's letter should be an official stamped form that he fills in to say that you live here so you take your 'contract of sale' along.

I used Olytrans and because our Muhtar spoke no English and I spoke no Turkish, I did have a little difficulty getting my letter which was he wrote by hand.

When I visited Olytrans, they said this wasn't the correct letter and showed me a copy of a more 'official' letter that I should of got. My heart sank at the thought of going back but they said they would see what they could do and it was excepted!

My advice to you is first go to the police station in Girne to get an 'ins and outs' record which shows the dates you came in and out of the TRNC. Visit Muhtar maybe with some one that could translate could be helpful.

Your shipping agent here should guide you through all of this. Good luck!!

Hi Loraine,

Welcome to the forum which I am sure you will find both interesting and helpful. Hubby and I are both originally from Darlington although we are presently living in London until we retire to Esentepe in the not to distant furture. If you do not get the information you need on this forum, I have a friend in Catalkoy who I am sure will be able to help.

Catalkoy Muhtar speaks excellent English - don't worry. But he will only give you the certificate once you know your container has arrived in Famagusta.

Welcome Lorraine, you can't go wrong using Olaytrans, they keep up a good communication and (for us anyway) everything arrived in tact, make sure you have several copy's of everything (Passport, Driving license, inventory) as everyone you meet seems to need a copy of one or the other.

Good Luck.

Oh, By the way I am from Thorpe Theweles, just outside of Middlesbrough, not too far from Darlington.

About Catalköy: catal = fork or crossroads and köy = village. (For your information if you're interested...)*

Hi Lorraine, just moved to Catalkoy myself from Dubai 5 months ago. Container went with Olaytrans about 3 months ao, took 5 weeks but there was a strike at Famagusta so that delayed for a week.

Muhktar office is next door to post office in the village.

Coming from Kyrenia take the first signposted right to Catalkoy village up the hill and at the fork where you will see a cafe in fromnt of you turn left. 200 metres down the road there is another fork with a small car park at the junction of the fork. Across the road is the post office and the door to the right is the Mukhtars office. 8am to 11am is best but if not there ask the post man he normally knows his timings.

As mentioned above you need to wait until the containers arrived and you need to make a small contribution. 10 TL was mine. You then need a seconnd signature from his woman as he called her but he will give dirstions to her grocery store and his english is very good.

Hope this helps, Paul

Welcome, Lorraine. We are coming and going to the UK, too, but hope to spend about 8 months a year here. I am from Stockton-on-Tees originally, although we live near Whitby now. We also have a house near Darlington which my husband used when he had his business. Seems that there are quite a few of us originally from the North East using this board.
