At least the streets looked clean, no litter around. Good photos, sad though to see a place like that.

It`d cost a Billion to repair and much will need demolishing and the utilities and infrastructure will be useless now.

It could however make a superb resort and City if done to a quality standard.

Thing is who would visit it when tourism in TRNC is negligible anyway and the property market is totally stalled??

open it up as a tourist attraction. thats all it is good for.

1. every hotel will have demolished , out of date.

2. every shop and house will need new utilities

3. all sewage systems will need replacing.

4. what will happend to all the rubble once demolision takes place.

who is going to pay for this

Investment hinges on any outcome of the peace talks i reckon.

Don`t think much private investment will be forthcoming very quickly the way things are.

It will probably stay like it is and resemble a lot of other war torn cities that currently scar the Middle East...

The hotel industry both sides of the line are in trouble - I'm sure the last thing they would want is a brand new resort in a fantastic location !

If the TRNC is annexed, or the UBP manage to bring local wages down to the Turkish level, I guess there is the potential for mass tourism here, but not in the eurozone

It just looks so fascinating, driving round the edge, how about making it safe, keeping it as it is, opening it up for visitors as an important feature of the island's history? I, for one, would be very happy to pay to walk round the streets and look into the buildings .... a bit like Pompeii!

I went to the main beach in Varosha in 1973, as you can see from the photo's the hotels are very close to the beach. In July the sun went behind the hotels at 14.00. If ever it is bulldozed and started again i hope the planners dont make the same mistakes

I read recently that the hotel industry in TRNC was suffering due to the fact that there are now more privately owned villa beds available than hotel rooms over there. And, of course, the money generated from those does not go into the TRNC economy.

I doubt that reviving Varosha and adding a huge extra number of hotel rooms will help solve their current problems.

This summer I saw quite a few establishments that had not bothered to open up, or had closed early in the season. And stayed at quite a few that were virtually deserted.

Dear BB

re msg 12

Varosha / Marash has always been considered TURKEY's 'bargaining chip'... if they start paying out for loss of use claims in the billions you may say a different attitude !

The concrete and supporting structure will be completely rotten after this time. There will be no alternative but to bulldoze the whole area. Flatten it and start again. (But not so high please)

As far as I know, Marash or Varosha, whole area was the property of Turkish Cypriot Trust. During the colony years, somehow properties had changed hands illegally in a period of time. Illegally, because property of any Trust can not be sold or can not change hands. It is true that its been said some money was paid by the British government but this was for the usage of the area for some period of time but not for the sale. (Saray Hotel in Lefkosa was built with some of this money) If Trust, how could it be sold. Then, these areas had been distributed through greek churches mostly as donations. Then sold to others. My question is, how legal was it to sell or to buy property of any Trust when law says 'no'? . Anyone to answer with the legal explanations of this ? , and please don't answer as this is Cyprus so anything is possible even those years.

Dear Insider re msg 18

Welcome to the board !

Are you referring to Evkaf ( Evkaf Idaresi ) ?

I seem to remember debating the validity of these trusts ( -esp, this area ) with Elko ( Ismet ) ...

Can there be any doubt that TCs voted - as part of Annan - to allow this region to come under the GC part of the bi-zonal federated Cyprus .. This would seem unlikely, if it could still be challenged as being owned by these Trusts..

Dear Lilli re 16

Thanks for asking... YES Veta is feeling better and seems to be gaining weight !!

I'm not surprised the UN / World outside CY are fed-up.. you only have to live OUTSIDE of CY to see how unimportant it seems to rank in the news.. :(

THAT isn't good for Cypriots, or non Cypriots living anywhere on the island .. it would be GREAT to have some positives in the news..
