Maybe your grand-grandparents have seen this ... erected? I wonder: does this ... still stand there? http://is.gd/4W6gL (answer at the bottom of the picture).

In case you cannot read the text (bottom of the picture in msg 1): "Cleopatra's needle, on the Victoria Thames embankment".

A glass of Congress sherry... Scene in the luncheon-room at the Radziwill Palace in Berlin (1878) http://is.gd/4W7n6

(The Congress of Berlin (13 June - 13 July 1878) was a meeting of the European Great Powers' and the Ottoman Empire's leading statesmen in Berlin in 1878. In the wake of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, the meeting's aim was to reorganize the countries of the Balkans. Otto von Bismarck, who led the Congress, undertook to balance the distinct interests of the United Kingdom, Russia and Austria-Hungary). Source and more: http://is.gd/4W715

A sad day... "The Queen placing flowers on the coffin of the late King of Hanover at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle". (The Illustrated London News, July 6, 1878). http://is.gd/4W8dr

(Why the last king of Hanover (1851–66), only son of Ernest Augustus, king of Hanover and Duke of Cumberland, was buried in England - more here: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/230069/George-V )

Cleopatra's Needle is still standing proud with it's 2 'Guarding' Sphinx's.

Useless (?) information:

1: beneath the Needle is a Victorian 'time capsule' containing Newspapers, photographs (lithographs?), a gentlemans Morning Suit, Coins, and pictures of some of the most attractive women of the time!

2: The 2 Guarding Sphinx's are actually facing the wrong way as Queen Victoria preferred them 'like that'!

3: The Needle and Sphinx's were damaged in a WW2 air raid, they were never repaired and the damage is clearly visible today.

4: 2 further matching needles are in Paris and New York.

5: It was presented to London from Mehemet Ali in Alexandria to commemorate our victory over Napolean.

6: It has no direct connection with Cleopatra, purely the connection with her home city, Alexandria.
