KAR were full up and couldn't accept anymore dogs, maybe a good idea to post breed and age of your dog.

Yes it is a shame, i agree, i took this dog in off the streets myself but due to an illness in the family i must return, i have no option. Please dont make me feel any worse than i already do about having to give him up. I love him to bits and wish i had the money to take him back with me.

He is about 6 months old, exact age cannot be verified as he was a street dog. Breed, again unverified, however he has short hair, white with brown spots, 2 large ones over both eyes and two just above his tail, smaller ones dotted about, he is still growing and i think will be the size of a english hunting dog, possible slightly smaller. Like i said, i would not do this if i was not desperate. I always disagreed with people getting dogs just to send them somewhere else, but i have no alternative. Scubi Doo is my life and i will miss him dearly but i must find him a loving home.

KAR will not take him...you'd be better off posting a few pics of him on here. Sorry but this is how it is. What will you do if you can't find him a home?

Many Cypriots and Brits/foreigners simply dump their unwanted dogs near an 'English enclave' - you may have no alternative but to do the same. KARS, when they have strays neutered, ear-tag them and return them to where they were reported as found - or so it is said, but how true I don't know.

Talking to KARS people on their stall outside Lemar, the other day, I enquired whether they were yet in a position to take our stray dog. The lady told me that they can't, as they're chocker.

I will have to delay my flight. I will never leave him on the streets, never ever. However a family member is very sick and i dont have much time. I do know of a couple of people that would possibly have him if i cant find someone on here who can take him.

How do i post pictures?

No, i will never dump him. He is a dog, not a bag of rubbish. A dog with feelings who was on the streets before. Can you imagine how he would feel? No, i will delay my flight before doing that.

It sickens me that i have to do this, i was always very opinionated when it came to animals, but like i say, you dont know how you would feel unless you are in that position. Its one of the toughest things i have had to do.

Thanks Lilli. You have no idea how much it means to have someone not telling me how awful it is to give up a dog. I cant stop crying just knowing ill never see him again. He has such a great personality and would make someone very happy. I know he will move on from this as he loves everyone and show him some food and your his best mate forever - but whether ill get over this is another matter. xx

If you are going to the UK to see someone who is sick, does this mean you are coming back? If you are, why not ask someone to just take him in, until you return?

because i cant be sure when that will be. Its not as simple as that but i dont want to go into great detail. Maybe i will come back but it could be months which by that time scubi would be settled, i couldnt very well go and take him back then.

No, unfortunately it has to be permanent.

How big is your dog, how old is it house trained etc and can you send a photo to wise.lydia@hotmail.com. If it is big I will not be able to help as I live in an apartment. Good luck.

He is about 6 months old just now, cant be sure as i took him in from the street 3 months ago and the vet thought he was about 3 months then. We do not know what breed he is so i dont know how big he will get. He is not a small dog such as a terrier though and i imagine he would grow to about a labrador size but again, he might not grow anymore, i really have no idea. He is pretty hyperactive but i think this is normal with him still being a puppy. He is very friendly, loves other dogs, kids and people. He is very playful. He is ok with cats too as i have one. Likes to play with them a bit but nothing a cat cant handle, once he gets a wee swipe it gets left alone! He is house trained but does have the odd mistake in the mornings sometimes, though it is always by the door, so so long as he gets out enough, he is fine. We have lots of toys for him so he doesnt tend to chew furniture either. Does this sound for you, do you still want me to send the photo?

Thanks, Gem

Ok, so i have spoken to KAR, they cannot take him, they said all they would do is neuter him and put him back on the streets. I can not let this happen, he will die out there, either from starvation through the winter months, poisoned or hit by a speeding car and more than likely bleed to death in pain. I know i am in no position to criticise but i cannot believe a rescue centre would do that, i understand they are full but a dog who has experienced warmth and love should not go back on the streets. I feel absolutely awful about the position i am in, i either stay here and not be with my sister through her dreadful illness, or i go and risk my beautiful dog being killed or starved.

Please does somebody know of somebody who can help? Someone with a big bit of land even that he can stay in to be safe, or someone who needs company. A teenager who loves dogs? Anything. Im at my wits end.

If someone can advise me how to upload photos, i shall do that too.

Thank you. I am definitely eating my words at the moment. Never again will i judge a person who has to get rid of their pet under difficult circumstances such as this. I am all for the saying a dog is for life and not just for christmas but sometimes things happen that are outwith your control.

My only blessing is that Scubi has only been with me for 3 months and he loves people so much that he will latch on to and love anyone. God help the people who are in my situation and have had their dogs for years and who have a more timid personality. It must be devastating.

Are you going back to the Uk for good or temporary ???

If you are going back for good, kennels cost £2600 approx per animal medium sized but you can pay a deposit and monthly payments thereafter.

If you are going back temporary then perhaps someone will dogsit for payment

If neither of the 2 above are feasible I would see your local Vet and plead with her to put the dog down .I would rather do the later than have it on my mind as to how the dog is doing on its own.

I do not intend to be unkind but a dog is for life ,my circumstances changed suddenly and we will now live most of our time in the UK and our animals (rescue dogs) are about to go into quarintine.

For anyone in this situation that Trudy finds herself in when you pick up that abandoned pup or stray bag of bones start a savings fund just incase the unthinkable happens to you one day.

Trudy i hope that you have a satisfactoy conclusion to this predicament you find yourself in.

Im going back temporarily but it could be ages before im back, if i had the money or knew i could afford the monthly payments then i would take him trust me. I will never ever get him put down or send him on to the streets, i am going to keep searching until someone is able to take him. I will just have to go back later and pray that im not too late. My dog is very important to me and yes, maybe i should have saved a fund in case something like this happened but im reasonably young, i didnt think and im obviously naive. I thought i was doing a good thing in taking the dog off the street and i have pretty much been made to feel like i am a bad person since this morning when all i did was ask for help. If i was so bad, then i would not feel the pain i do and would not be trying desperately to re home scubi. This is a horrible situation to be in, i do not come from a family that could help me. So ill keep trying for Scubi.

I bet there isnt a bad bone in your body thats why like a lot of us on here you did what you did saving this dog.If nothing else your predicament highlights the need for thought before taking these animals into our homes.I am well aware that it is a case of burying our heads in the sand as we walk past them but at least we can have nice thoughts and imagine that they will live happily everafter and are getting by.The first dog I had was in the kennels at KAR for 3 yrs after been found tied up in the garden after the owners left (Brits ) The second one was left on the rocks as a pup with a chain around her neck she managed to get from the beach to the main road were she was hit by a car .The TC took her to KAR were they paid for her to be put right.Would I have done anything different NO did I save for a rainy day NO.Are you a bad person Trudy for what you did not in a million years.I wish you all the luck in the world both you and Scubi

Thank you so much. Hopefully someone will see this and decide they would like my beautiful dog. I just wish that Scubi doesnt think i gave him away because i hated him, because he is the funniest and loveliest dog i have ever known, i hope he finds a lovely happy home to go to and lives happily ever after.

Please, if anyone else can think of someone who would like a dog, please please let me know. Many thanks

As there are plainly so many feral, unwanted, abandoned - whatever applies - cats and dogs in TRNC, is there any way that KAR or anyone could form some alliance with a group on the Greek side who could liaise with families or folk that side who are willing to take in (ONLY - not to operate in reverse and ask TRNC folk to take any of their waifs and strays) these animals? It would double the amount of people who may be in a position to accommodate one or more of them........

I realise they would have some strays, but people often fall in love with a picture - so although there may not be a family TRNC side for a particular animal, there may be one on the Greek side, surely, all possibilities should be explored in this miserable situation........

we have just rehomed our two dogs, which like you we rescued, and like you,a family crisis back home foced our hand. we are now down to our last two weeks in cyprus. we made posters by putting a photograph onto a card and writing details underneath.we posted them in the vets, pet shops and supermarkets.the guys at bellapais pet shop were very good and put us in touch with a lady who was looking for our type of dogs. we like you were at our wits end. they have now gone to a loving home, and they have stayed together.hopfully you too will get a good result.good luck.

Im so happy for you underdog. I can imagine now how people feel. Poor Scubi was just a little puppy abandoned and i took him in thinking i was changing his life for the better, i managed 3 whole months before i have to go. It hurts so much knowing i will never see him again, i just pray someone takes him, as he will make someone very happy, im sure. I know he will be ok, he is that well natured, he would leave me for a meal any day, i know it! Your lucky someone took on both dogs, its nice to know there are good people out there.

Scubi is very hyperactive though, and being the pointer i think he may be, isnt helping. It would be different i think if he was a small terrier. But he is beautiful and deserves a loving home. Thanks for the luck, i need it! x

Trudy if you are really stuck I will look after him until your return as I am feeling your pain. After Max I said NO MORE, today another walked into my life but I firmly beleive that he belongs to someone.I havent posed it on here to give you and Poogle a chance. I would look after him until your return as I know whatever the circumstances, beleive you me not long lost my baby sister. You will need him when you get back. We tried to start a fostering system and to date Im the only one who has. {Please callme on 05338336911)If I can help you I will, only thing is I have to go back for a week 8th dec so may have to get him in a kennel. Will this affect him two changes. call me anytime xxxxx

Lilli, you are so kind. Thank you so so much. I would accept your offer in a flash only i cant promise when i would be back, it could be months and i would hate to just say ok ill be back in 4 weeks or whatever then not make it. I have big probs back home that may take ages to sort out. It is so so lovely of you to offer, but i would not want to put him to you without having a return date. It wouldn't be fair. If i don't have someone who can permanently take him by Thursday night then i will have to stay here as i refuse to put him down or on the streets.

My problem is that he is soooo hyper! I might as well be honest so as not to get cursed once i have gone! Once you get to know him, he is adorable and so so funny, but initially you want to give him some calming pills or something! He is only 6 months though i suppose!

Trudy dont I know it got 2 pointers already, love them to peices espically the way I brought them back to life but my god they are lovely but drive me mad. However I will help you of course if you need me and you have my word whilst I will love it, I have learnt to become detached as all those I take I know I willl find homes. Max was a spirtual bond to me and I know people will make me a freak, but all who knew and loved him saw it. His place in my heart can never be replaced. Im in pain every day for that guy. However your pain is greater. Do what you have to do. The offer is there. All I can say keep strong x

Trudy, are you renting a place or do you own a place, are you leaving it empty. I could come and live in it, rent free but pay bills and look after your dog until you come back. It would need to be close to East of Girne though.

This is so sad. I have a dog that we took from KAR. And the other week a little dog seemed to follow us everywhere and would not leave us, so we have taken her in as well. We have quite a few strays round here which seem to find us so have my hands full. If it was not for this I would of taken him for you. Hope you find somewhere for him.

Good luck

Trudy, see Message 44.

However its worth a try to actually take the dog to KAR at Arapkoy and offer them a generous donation and its possible they will take him, however there is no guarantee that they wont put him back out on the streets, but who knows someone may adopt him (walking season is just around the corner for KAR) and then you can say that you have done the right thing and its out of your control whatever happens after.

I am overwhelmed by the response on here and thank each and everyone of you for replying to me and not judging my actions.

Lilli, I know you are a very caring lady, not just from this post but i know from previous posts too. If you can take Scubi it would mean the world to me. I just cannot guarantee my return and thats the problem. I am only 24, i dont own a home here so, LostFound, as much as thats a great offer which i would have accepted, im having to terminate my lease too. I feel so down about this whole situation that i feel like i no longer wish to return to Cyprus, i have lived here for 5 years and maybe enough is enough which is why i was looking for something permanent for Scubi Doo.

I offered KAR a donation to pay for all his costs for at least 3 months, and because i have lived here for so long, i can only take one suitcase back so i said i would put all my clothes, and i have a lot, to their charity shop too. But the lady still said no and informed me ...

.... that he would still end up on the streets. I understand that they are full but to put a dog who has experienced the warmth and love that a family and a home brings, back on the street when winter is approaching is appalling.

I never expected a response like this and i am very grateful that there are so many caring people on this forum.

Im not going to lie, Scubi Doo is very active, a bit boisterous and will jump on people! But only because he wants to play and loves people. There is not a bad bone in his body. He would never turn on someone and is very grateful. I remember the day i bought his first toy! It was like the happiest day of his life!

My problem is now, that im not sure i even want to return, we have a lot of problems in our family and i feel i should go back and be with them.

MSG 46 ... this is why I am so against KAR

If you give money they will take him, they should take him regardless..they are either full or not, it should not be about financial gain!!!

They said they would, but that he would be put on the streets once neutered. I cant take that risk, the lady told me herself that they cannot help me. Scubi would not cope back on the streets, he needs love.

I have a contact whom i am trying to call now, hopefully they can be of some help, i shall be sure to post when i have any joy.

In the meantime, any other contacts or ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks

Nice talking to you too Judy, spoke to Karen, she cannot take him herself as she has soooo many but i have to call her back in 45 mins and she will see if she can help in some way. Hopefully me and Scubi will get some good news today. So long as he goes to a loving home, i can be sure he will be happy. As much as i have let him down, i feel he will forgive me if i can find him a loving family to go to.

Will post when i hear more, thank you for your help x

Seriously, i cant believe how nice everyone has been. Its really touched me. I thought, when i initially posted this, that i was going to get a whole bunch of "a dog is for life" and "how can you do that to scubi" stuff, but no, everyone has been so so kind that i wish there was a way to repay each and everyone of you. My whole life, relationship and willpower has fallen to pieces in a matter of days, and if i can, by tomorrow, find scubi doo a new home, i will feel much better. This is definitely the hardest thing i have ever had to do, but thanks to everyone on here, i have hope that someone will take him.

Thanks again x

My experiences with KAR have been entirely negative.

Once you have taken care of a dog for 5 minutes their attitude is that you have rescued it and it needs no further rescuing. So you can clear off.

Worse, we gave a home to a large dog that parked itself outside our front door for a few days. It had a big red KAR tag on its ear which we confirmed over the 'phone with KAR that it meant it had been neutered. 12 weeks later it gave birth to 9 puppies. Just shoddy and slipshod. And people give money to these jerks!

So, you are best advised to take some photos of it, and get a friendly shopkeeper to stick it up in the window! I'll stick up a poster for you if you want.

Without this post degenerating into yet another KAR bashing event, I will just point out that a dog is tagged by a vet ONLY after it has been neutered/spayed - KAR staff DON'T tag dogs. I can only assume that in this case, the vet either checked the dog over and assumed that it had been done, an error was made during the operation or maybe the dog was already pregnant before neutering. Therefore a bit unfair to describe KAR volunteers as jerks.

Anyway, back to the original post and back to the top.

Trudy, I wish you all the luck and really hope that you are successful in finding a home for Scubi.

Regards

Paul

Yes i am flying out tomorrow, my ex boyfriend will keep him until someone can take him so at least i know he is in safe hands. Ideally i would like to have met the family who were going to take him but i will keep posting on here until someone knows of someone.

Thank you for all your help. It really means a lot xx

Dee

I am not a vet, all I was doing was providing a few thoughts as to why the dog may have had pups when it was thought that it had been neutered. The point I was making was that KAR staff have nothing to do with the physical tagging of a dog and that it is only done by the vet AFTER a dog has been neutered or spayed.

Trudy, glad to hear that you have managed to create some more time in order to get Scubi a home. I hope that everything goes well for you when you get back to the UK and that maybe you are able to come back out for a reunion with him.

Best wishes

Paul
