Hi all,

First post on the site so go easy on me!!!!

Family of 7 coming over for a couple of weeks in March 2010 and i was just wondering if any Bitter/Guinness or Cider has reached Northern Cyprus yet??

I only ask as I am not sure if anyone is allowed to import such things in to TRNC.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Very rare to get bitter in pubs but Guiness from a tin is sometimes available. I'm not sure about cider but there was a cider bar once. All these are available from supermarkets, a bit expensive though - £1.60 for 500ml of poor quality bitter.

Welcome to the forum.

With a bit of searching I am sure that you will find what you are looking for.

However, I would suggest that you try Efes (the local beer). It is not a bad pint and should you want something a bit more 'stouty', try Efes Dark or Efes Dark Brown. Both are very easy on the tastlebuds.

Cheers

Tempo sell Guinness and Cider in tins, not cheap though. Bells sometimes have it in. The wholesaler behind Pia Bella should have it (avoid Yalcin butchers)

Best to take a trip South to Orphanides or Carrefour. They certainly have it, and cheaper, apart from the 25e insurance,

Last time I bought cans of draught guinness in the south it worked out at less than £1 a pint.

The Corner Bar in Alsancak serves Strongbow, John Smiths and Guiness, all from cans. I don't drink them so don't know cost though I think Strongbow is 5TL for 500ml can.

Leylandlad, you don't say where you are going to be staying.

The local pubs here all sell Efes. You can fairly easily find Fosters & Carlsberg on 'draft'. But, and I'm sure you know this already, the above are just gassy tasteless Pils-type lagers with no individuality (though in my opinion Efes Pils out of the blue bottle is probably the best of a sorry bunch).

Cider, it's the same deal. It's easy to find Strongbow in cans in the supermarkets and the bars, some will also sell Magners and or Bulmers. There was a bloke flogging another tinned specialty cider a while back but he seems to have stopped.

So it's all pretty much mass-produced muck.

But here's the good news. There are a very few bars selling Marston's Pedigree and Bateman's XXXB. Very, very good. Ileli supermarket has it, Bell Foods too I think, for £2/pint. (4.95TL) And I know of 2 bars that will sell it to you over the counter for £3 or less. Kings Bar in Turquoise Bay (nr Korineum) and Stevies in Tatlisu.

Bells currently have the 'widget' cans of guinness at 1/2 price, John Smiths 'widget' bitter, Marstons bitter, Tetley bitter and cider (can't remember the brand).

Gallons of Efes!

I started drinking it and ended up waterlogged! This lager alcohol absorbion rate is a lot slower than one's body's alcohol processing rate, you consequently have to drink it very fast to get whammed. I think they use a lot of rice water in its production, an old home brewing trick to stop lager tasting yeasty.

Great session drink or just nice for a refresh but Starling were stocking 440cl Strongbow cans @ TL 1.20 (60p) each last August. No contest, we cleared them out for a barbi on the balcony and low and behold one line of cans in the supermarket chilled shelve became 2 for several weeks. God knows what happened after we left, surplus Strongbow!

most supermarkets are doing special offers now. 500ml Guinness, Stella, Efes for 2tl, 500ml Strongbow and John Smiths for 2.75tl.

Could account for some of the postings on here lately.

When I am over I always drink Efes or for a change Efes Dark, which is abit like a strong ale. If you want to try it out before you go they sell it in Morrisons at £1.30 a bottle or also in Wetherspoons.

JK's in Lapta sell Guiness and Strongbow Cider plus a new one that I don't know the name of in bottles which seems to be quite popular.

Hi Martin

If you're anywhere near Alsancak pop into our bar, 15's Bar & Restaurant where we sell Draught Guinness in Cans (would love to do draught but only available via the south) and cans of John Smiths and Strongbow all at 6tl.

We also sell bottles of Kingstone Press ciders (both apple and pear) - really lovely and very popular - at 8tl for 660ml, and bottles of Batemans XXXB and Combined Harvest, Summer Lightning, Marston's Oyster Stout and Pedigree and also Hoegaarden (Belgian wheat beer) as well as the usual Carlsberg, Tuborg, Miller, Becks, Efes and Fosters.

Hope we get to meet you when you're over.
