Looking at the sea today you'd do better dangling a cord off the the end of a bamboo cane using a magnet as bait and trawl the supermarkets in the tin fish departments! Safer too!

Tuna fishing season is May to October. The Med is a major breeding ground for Bluefin Tuna and they migrate down here in the summer. There are always some about but the chances of a catch are very much reduced now. There are other fish about at this time of year, dolphin (not the mammal) are common and the amberjack (locally called Mineri) but generally the fishing is better when the water is warmer.

The best guy is Barbaros, he has a big Princess boat in the old harbour. He runs 12 rods simultaneously so the chances of a catch are good - but there are no guarantees. He charges about £50 per person for the day which includes a good hot meal and plenty of drinks (hot and cold). The problem is getting enough people together to make up a party - he will want a minimum of 4 people before going out.

I suggest you wait until the summer, contact Barbaros, and then ask on this board to try to get people to make up a trip. I for one will be interested.

Thanks all for your help. We have a guest staying who asked as he was here before in October and went tuna fishing. I thought perhaps this went through to November. Will pass your comments on. He really is a carp fisherman but I don't know much about that here!

I believe there is a lake here which has carp and there is a company which organise day fishing trips. Hope someone else can shed more light on this one.

Dolphin are accidentally caught and killed by all sorts of fishermen, not just tuna fishermen. The French fishermen in the Channel kill hundreds of dolphin and they never fish for tuna. But whatever fishermen they are, they are trawlers; not the rod & line tuna fishermen we are talking here. Dolphin never take rod & line lures, although the dolphin fish (not the mammal) is often caught when rod & line tuna fishing.

So even if tuna fishing were banned, which it is not, the ban would not apply to rod & line fishermen.
