If you are prepared to ditch the BBC and ITV you do not need a 4.2 dish.

YES, but try to upgrade to HD, first.. you'll be able to record - you will want to go to sleep - before the late evening UK prog ends !

A good 1.8m dish - well installed will give you 30+ HD channels and C4 and even ITV.. you can get BBC stuff via the interactive button.

simply if you want to receive BBC and Itv on sky box you will need a 4.2 dish to enable the box to pick up sufficient signal to give you reception but if you want sky sports and movie channels you can receive these with a much smaller dish I believe you can use a 1.8 m dish. when I was there BBC news 24 could be received with the smaller dish.

You could also not bother with the box and subscribe to one of the companies offering access to a UK VPN this allows you to watch the BBC,ITV etc live and also record them via your computer, you will need a 1meg connection though to watch stuff live if you only have 512 you will have to record and watch later

Dear Paul

re msg 8 UK VPNs

I derive some income from providing such things, but If I had the choice of watching UK TV via Satellite or using a computer - I know which I prefer.. !

IMHO .. VPNs are for those who CAN'T get UK Sat TV ...

ISPs are increasingly getting 'wise' to the huge downloads involved with TV progs.. In the UK this AM, I tried to download the 'Around the world in 80 days' series from Children in Need' and was warned that this would use 3.7 gigs and that several UK ISPs might consider this excessive use and exceeding their' Fair access policy rules' ..which could adversely effect my internet access speeds..

With Sat TV.. there's no such usage restriction..

If I bring an HD box over will the 1.8M dish have to be motorised? Any idea on cost of supply and installation?

Many Thanks

Hi Gallowgate8

the 1.8m can be motorised, but I would NOT advise motorising a dish with a SKY receiver on it..

SKY send the updates and the Electronic Prog guide constantly and the SKY box doesn't have DiSEqC capability

If you miss broadcasts the HD box may behave strangely and recordings would CERTAINLY fail

I would recommend Iceman

He isn't the cheapest.. but he is THE best ...

so, if you brought a sky box from the uk (that has been set up already in a room?, or can i just buy one and not have it installed in the uk and bring it over?), and if i got a 1.8m dish installed, (how much for installation?), i would get roughly 30 channels, including itv but not bbc1. Is that correct? How much for a 1.8m dish also please.

If you have a SKY box and subscription channels - YES - best turned on in UK - but not essential if your contract is 1 yr old, or more. HD is best - as HD channels strongest

Channels on 1.8m - if a good, well- tuned dish..

ITV, Ch 4 HD, more 4, E4, Film 4, News 24 , BBC Parliament , the RED button - leading to F1 GP, Final Score, etc, SKY News, CNN, Eurosport - all HD channels, save BBC HD, and smany more SKY channels

RADIO's 1 - 4

They just ARE .. ;)

There are five sats which broadcast SKY, and depending which one it is the channels can be too weak to even REACH Cyprus !! ( e.g Euronews )

The HD channels happen to be on a strong bird/ transponder combination..

Now WHY ?.. Hmm I believe SKY want the signal to reach further ;)
