| We saw a concert of singers from St Petersburg in Glos'shire early in October.. they were SO good we went along to see them again - performing their last, but one concert - before they go home on Sunday 22nd We expected the same repertoire but they paid tribute to the UK Soldiers that have lost their lives in Afghanistan... Then a soprano sang Verdi's requiem - unaccompanied.. no instrumental support... and BLEW us away.. We were all in tears.. They didn't need to do that.. nearly 30 years ago we sent money to fund the Mujahedin to defeat the Soviets.. but it was a grand gesture.. If I wasn't married to a Russian I' never have considered going.. but at least more folk learnt that Mary Hopkin's 'Those were the days' - her Eurovision winner - is a RUSSIAN FOLK song ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Those_Were_the_Days_(song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm0iQz24Aac ..when it looked like the west and Russia could get along better.. ;) |
