There is a lady in Girne hospital today (Sunday) who was bitten on her foot by a "brown coloured snake". Apparently she was walking in the hills above Lapta and entered a sunny glade and accidently trod on the snake.

So be aware and watch where you tread folks. The warm weather has kept the snakes active.

If you go down to the offices near the Girne Court House you'll see many snakes wandering around in black gowns!

If you are walking in the foothills/mountains do what the goat herders do and wear wellington boots and take a long stick with you to prod the undergrowth as you walk.

Welsh shepherds wear wellington boots too, but I hear they are for a different purpose.

Yesterdays Cyprus Today gave an emergency number for people to call if they find a snake in their villa or shed! And urged people not to kill them.

To quote that famous Kiwi bard - Fred Dagg - 'The Gumboot Song'

'If it weren't for your gumboots, where would ya be?

You'd be in the hospital or infirmary, 'coz you would have a dose of the 'flu, or even pleurisy

If ya didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.

Now there's rugby boots and racing boots, and boots for drinkin' rum. But the only boots I'm never without, are the ones that start with "gum". I've got short ones and long ones, and some up to me belt. I'm never dressed 'till I've got on me gumboots.

Whenever I sing at the opera, my gumboots are a must. They help me hit the high notes, and protect me feet from dust.

They keep the water well away, so me voice won't get no rust. You will not never see me without me gumboots.

Now (names of current unpopular politicians), they haven't made a hit. They're ruining the country, more than just a bit. If they keep on how they're going, we'll all be in the shit. So you'd better get yer feet up yer gumboots!'

Cheers!

I suppose Billy Connelly did this one, too, Nursey!

'I was speaking to a mate of mine just the other day

A guy called Bruce Bayliss actually who lives up our way

He's been living in Europe for the year, more or less

I said "How was Europe, Bruce?" He says "Fred, it's a mess"

We don't-know how-lucky we are mate

We don't-know how-lucky we are

Me stock agent's got a beach place where he spends most of his days

His wife bit the dust down there last year, got ate by a couple of crays

And his two littlest daughters got killed by a whale

I said "Are you goin' down there this year mate?"

He says "Fred, right on the nail"

"We don't know how fortunate we are to have that place We don't know how propitious are the circumstances Frederick"

So if things are looking really bad and you're thinking of givin' it away

Cont'd:

'Remember New Zealin's a cracker place and I reckon that come what may

If things get appallingly bad and we all get atrociously poor

If we stand in the queue with our hats out one can borrow a few million more.

We don't know how lucky we are, mate

We don't know how lucky we are

We don't know how lucky we are, mate

We don't know how lucky we are.

Another snake spotted...

We came across a brown diamond head shaped snake on Monday, 23rd Nov.

Near our house in Esentepe.

The snake was motionless, and looked dead.

So got a long stick and gave it a few prods, nothing.

Then it woke up :-0

and just slithered off into the bush.

If you see a snake out there,

give it a wide berth,

we were lucky!!!

It's a good job she didn't get bitten by the one I nearly ran over outside my house, a blunt nosed viper about 7 foot long maybe more and the diameter of an Effes pint mug base, it was easily big enough to eat a small dog, My missus nearly sh*t herself, I bet she would have fainted if we weren't

in the jeep.

Actualy Tattlad thats just what got the lady and she was very lucky as they have a slow venom. She was on a hill path above Lapta and it took them neary 2 hours to get down and into hospital. She is home now and doing ok.

Sorry, I know many will disagree with me but I think should be killed on sight. I am petrified of them so it's a gut raeaction. If I could be sure Eire had none then I would settle there for sure!!!!

Most snakes will not strike humans unless they feel threatened. They also do a good job in keeping vermin down. ie. rats and mice. The best advice I got from a young lady in Corfu (sorry bout bad word) was if you find one in the garden stay away from the area for a day or so and they will go away.

Carrie, thought ST Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland. (no offence intended).

Just hope I don't meet one on a dark night!

The lady said she did not hear it counting so it can't have been an adder! At least the snake was happy, it went away singing Fangs for the Memory.... I know I was there.

I have never thought twice about snakes and I fear them not. They will be more afraid of you than you of them. Tread carefully though, They only bite if threatened. (Wouldn't you?)

Msg 20 that was no tale, me and the wife were witness to that sighting, and it was no exaggeration either.

Where we lived in Devon we saw on more than one occasion snakes that were 5 or 6 foot long and as thick as your arm. If they get that big in UK I would believe anything here.

Tattlad, last year we saw a snake as large as the one you saw. About 6 foot long and about 4-5inches round. The poor (?) thing had been run over on the road between Tatlisu and Girne. We all had a good look at it and had the creeps for days! So far we have never bought our wellies with us, perhaps we should travel in them to save luggage space!
