Is it just me, or does ayone else think that a good english speaking radio station is needed here?. Anywhere there are ex pats eleswhere in the world has a half decent commercial station advertising business and events to the community, so why should north cyprus be different?. When travelling in the car I cannot believe the quality ( or lack of it) of the crap stations that are available. The only ones I can find are one on 88fm with no speaking and repeat songs and one, which seems to come from the american university, which is, quite frankly, the worst I have ever heard!. What do you think?

I have wondered for a long time why there isn't an English language radio station here, aimed at Brits, their requirements and their interests. Radio stations need a lot of money and that can only come from advertising. Maybe the market isn't big enough yet?

I don't think it has anything to do with being important, rather it would be a commercial decision about whether the ex-pat community could support a station financed by advertising aimed at them.

While agreeing that the quality of the English spaeking radio here in the TRNC is poor, there is a magazine style radio programme with horoscopes, news, recipes etc on Bayrak International on 105MHz (Kyrenia) other frequencies can be found here: http://www.brtk.cc/index.php/lang/en/cat/89

I would stick with Internet radio where possible. A good site if you miss a little of the home local or national radio: http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/indiv.asp

Re msg 3, dee do you mean " arnt important enough"? . Internet radio, and radio feeds are ok but, they do have their limitations, such as no listening in the car ( unless you own a maybach ) and the whole point of local radio is to advertise local business s and local events. That being the commercial side of things, there is also the fact that people listen to local radio due to local features, news and the like.

On the subject, does anyone know anything about the station which broadcasts on 88fm?, seems rather pointless seeing that theres no presenter, so no talking. One day, all they did was play an abba album back to front over and over again. Why go yo the trouble of setting it up then doing that?.

Google BBC radio 4 and follow instructions and you'll be able to listen through your computer or download RealPlayer, go to 'talk' click to editors favorites and you're up and running.

Well, I know at least 2 Dutch people who would listen to it!!!!!! LOL

As for starting a radio station, who is going to fund it? Without loads of cash you could not get started and how many would listen to fund the advertising costs? Not many.

I listen to Radio 2 at home and take the opportunity to listen to endless supply of Cd's in the car.

msg12. Local radio listeners far outstrip national listeners in the uk. As for advertisers, look at the number of bars and resturants, not too mention all the other shops and service businesss in north cyprus who have to depend on CYPRUS TODAY for their only source of advertising which, lets face it, is not the best. As for loads of cash, that was true many years ago, but todays techno means its a lot cheaper. Take the station I mentioned on 88.00fm, whoever that is , broadcasts with no income at all, because, besides no talk, there isnt any adverts either!. Does anyone know who it is?, would be interesting to know who, and why?

I currently put out a show on Wednesday evenings on Radio ADA. At the moment there is only one other English speakingDJ (Mike Schofield) who broadcasts his show on a Monday afternoon. Apart from us there is no other DJ (Cypriot or British). Anyone fancy having a go? The equipment is superb and is quite easy to use. Also the signal is getting much better (96.3 in the west & 93.8 in the east). We don't get paid as it's on a voluntary basis, but is good fun, and through this link both Mike and I know that we get regular listeners. Anyone intersted post a reply, and I'll arrange for you to meet the owner, and also show you around the studio. The radio studio is opposite Unwins on the main Girne to Lapta road. It's in your hands if you want more ex pats on the radio. Max......

Local radio is mostly about local news, although a patch to BBC for UK news would be nice (if allowed). Problem with local news - it involves places and people with Turkish names which can be very difficult to pronounce correctly by most non-native speakers.
