Dear all, It is a fact that having A/c units is a must in Cyprus due to the hot humid summers etc. Just to let you know in England we deal with a lot of planning applications for installation and problems of noise of units whether fitted with/out permission causing a noise issue of keeping people awake during the night and also day time nuisance. I very much doubt that the NC have any regulations regarding the siting of units etc. (or do they) Here the applicant has to employ an acoustic engineer to carry out sound monitoring of the area around the building at the quietest time of the 24 hour day (around 3AM) to register the background noise levels. The machine that is fitted should not by law be more than 1(dba) above this level. If witnessed from a complaint the person responsible has to carry out works for it to comply. Just letting you know, to think about where you have them sited (roof would be the best place out of the way and out of sight) Also a lot of people do not realise that after a while the bearings start to wear and can cause rattling and other noises. these can be a real pain in the ar@e for neighbours. Also proper wall and floor mounting rubber gaskets that deflect vibration noise should be fitted, a lot of company's screw/bolt brackets direct to wall and floors without this and the noise can travel through walls and across floors. This can be a problem for the person having the work done as well, inspect inside and outside before parting with your cash. Ask your installer questions on what is what and do not be fobbed off.. So.............. remember if you own it, you are responsible t o maintain it! Happy cool days! Tiggy. Hope this is of help to you.

As an a/c installer, I also deal with this matter. Modern units with inverter compressors are much quieter than non inverter ones and are more economical to run (also this helps when having to run them off the genny) My bug bear with NC A/c installers is when they dont cut pipework they just curl it up around the unit! GRRRRRRRR. JB

being cheeky but I don't suppose you could give a brief check list of what to look for when buying units as I think this is one of the must do's on my list when I am over in June, and its something I know very little about

Hello JamesB, Glad to hear you are in the game. Here in England we also use "modern" units as well and at times they go wrong causing nuisance. Some installers cut corners on fitting units. Also when approached by a customer FORGET t o tell the person they may well need to get planning permission and regulations about background level readings have to be considered! All I am doing is to try and make people aware of the possible pitfalls and also to consider the neighbours. Hello Bettie, We do not have the powers t o tell people which type of unit should be used or specialise in them. All we know and have powers for is to stop noise nuisance. Whoever you employ if they give you a load of old sales patter that "Well Sir/Madam we recommend the more expensive one as it is quieter" they are taking people for mugs. Over the past several years they are getting more and more popular, most people just get them as a statement of wealth. "The in thing" As usual not trying to put anyone’s nose out, just like most on this forum only trying to be of help. T.

hi bertie over the years i have helped a lot of people buy air con units here in turkey and from my past experiances like tiggy has said not always the most expensive named brands seem to be the best performers energy efficent or noisy, the best makes to go for from my many test and this is including after service parts and labour are vestel-regal (same make) - lg-beko-arcelik (lg makes the parts for beko and arcelik) you also got to remember the higher the b.t.u (power) the noiser it will be so you got to measure the size of your rooms, for bedrooms if they are doubles a 9000btu will be sufficent and for living rooms of a decent size a 1800btu is more than enough if you are a smoker i would suggest get a aircon unit with a plazma function on it which cleans the air in the room aswell, hope this helps hi james you bug bear has also been mine so one day i asked a fitter why do all installers not cut the pipework and just curl them behind the unit his answer was if the customer moves house and takes the units with them and there new place they cant place the outside unit on the other side of the wall to the inside unit then they will have enuf pipe to place it wherever they want, which makes sense i suppose if you are thinking like a turk!!!!! LOL warm regards ukturk

hi tiggy thanks for your kind words mate!!! just passing on my info i have collected over the years, one thing i would say with vestel and regal their after service is good their air con units are guarented for 5 years the outside unit and 3 years the inside unit so if anything goes wrong they replace any part plus the service is free of charge and also if you buy these units from appoved dealers the fitting is done free of charge too thats a hard decision to make mate being a spurs fan and im not really fond of chelski but on the other hand not to fond of man u either but glad its a all english final shows that the premire league is the best in the world!!!! one thing thou god help moscow whoever losses that night warm regards ukturk

Hi Erkan and Tiggy, I know what you mean but in the uk 98% of units do not come with pipework. it is ---bought, formed, clipped or fixed in trunking, brazed, pressure tested (with oxygen free nitrogen, safe for the environment) and then all the air & moisture removed using a vacuum pump, for the specific installations. To be honest Tiggy I think this noise thing is another example of the world gone mad. common sense should prevail. Lg are very good. JB
